The country with one of the lowest obesity rates and highest life expectancy is Japan.
4-5% of their population is classified as obese while Western Nations can exceed 30-40%.
Here are 10 crucial reasons why Japan is one of the healthiest countries in the world:
1. Their healthcare system
Japan’s healthcare system is proactive emphasizing preventive care.
They focus on holistic health, prevention, and traditional medicine practices like kampo (traditional Japanese medicine).
Their system is also regulated to be affordable & universally accessible.
The private U.S. healthcare system is fraught with insurance companies, high prices, and a significant influence from food and pharma companies.
They spend the most on healthcare while having the lowest life expectancy among large wealthy countries.
2. Being at a healthy weight is a social standard
There’s bigger social pressure in Japan to maintain a healthy weight, especially in the workplace.
The government also has a law, the Metabo Law, which requires companies to screen employees for abdominal fat and encourage healthy lifestyle changes.
This focus on collective well-being promotes healthier living habits.
3. They eat a traditional diet
The Japanese diet is rich in fish, vegetables, rice, seaweed, and soy-based products like tofu.
These foods are low in calories and rich in nutrients, contributing to better overall health.
They focus on freshness, minimal processing, minimal sugar and fat, higher standards for food safety, and an overall cultural appreciation for food quality.
4. Healthy eating is taught early
Learning about nutrition is a core part of their education system.
They run a mandated school lunch program, known as Shokuiku (食育), which translates to "food education."
This program is designed to teach students about nutrition, balanced diets, and the cultural significance of food.
Students have home economics classes where they are taught how to cook simple, healthy meals.
Schools also don't allow snacking between meals.
5. They live active lifestyles
Japanese people, particularly in cities, walk a lot.
Public transportation is widely used, and it often involves walking to and from stations.
Many Japanese people also ride bicycles, contributing to regular physical activity, which helps burn calories and stay lean.
Living an active lifestyle is a standard part of their culture.
6. They promote mindful eating
In Japan, there is a strong cultural emphasis on eating in moderation, encapsulated in the principle of "hara hachi bu", which means eating until you're 80% full.
This helps people avoid overeating and keeps calorie intake in check.
In school, students are often asked to reflect on what they ate and how it made them feel, to create mindfulness of what they ate at a young age.
7. They eat wildly smaller portions
Unlike many Western countries where portions can be oversized, Japanese servings are generally modest.
Smaller portion sizes lead to lower caloric intake, which helps maintain a healthy body weight.
Japan emphasizes a culture that prioritizes balance, variety, and satisfaction without overindulging while the U.S. leans towards getting the most value for money.
8. Balanced Mental Health
Japan works hard but also has a strong culture of stress management.
They promote practices like meditation, bath rituals, and forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), which involves spending time in nature.
These factors combined create an environment that promotes reduction of stress, longevity and lower obesity rates.
9. Lack of influence from food or pharma companies
Food and pharma companies do not have the same kind of influence that you might see in countries like the U.S.
Food companies can advertise, but there’s less of a push toward unhealthy, oversized portions like you see in the U.S.
There’s also more regulation around advertising aimed at children while schools promote healthy eating (through the Shokuiku program).
Most importantly, you won’t see the same level of pharma commercials that you see in the U.S., which reduces the influence of these companies by a large margin.
10. Japan promotes health over profits
Compared to Western countries, Japan prioritizes the health of the population over corporate interests.
This doesn’t mean that food or pharma companies have no influence.
It means their ability to sway public health policy is more limited due to government regulation, cultural practices, and a strong emphasis on preventive care.

10. Japan promotes health over profits
In short, they avoided the systemic issues of the U.S. and other Western Nations while promoting being healthy over making money.
This doesn't mean they're perfect by any means but numbers don't lie and we can learn a lot from what they're doing.
While we haven't fixed our health system (yet) we can apply a lot of what the Japanese day-to-day do to make ourselves healthy.
