Growing evidence shows that #psoriasis and metabolic syndrome (MetS) may be more interconnected than we thought.
Let's dive into the fascinating links between these two conditions ↓
1/8
#Psoriasis is marked by persistent #inflammation in the skin.
But psoriasis is more than skin-deep.
Studies have shown both psoriasis and metab. syndrome to influence:
- immune system dysfunction
- pro-inflamm. cytokines
- oxidative stress
- adipokines
- gut microbiota
2/8
Diving deeper:
Psoriasis is associated w/ ↑ levels of **Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines** including IL-17 and TNF-α.
These cytokines not only contribute to skin inflammation but also play a role in metabolic disorders like:
- #obesity
- #diabetes
- #hypertension
3/8
Adipose tissues secrete **adipokines** inc. leptin and adiponectin, which regulate #metabolism.
↓ adiponectin levels & ↑ leptin levels were observed in psoriasis pts & are linked to MetS.
Adipokines could indicate risk of developing metabolic complications in psoriasis.
4/8
Oxidative stress = imbalance b/w harmful free radicals & the body's antioxidant defenses and is implicated in both psoriasis & MetS.
oxidative stress leads to → cell damage, inflammation & insulin resistance
∴ → metabolic dysfunction
5/8
Gut #dysbiosis, an imbalance in gut microbiota, has been observed in psoriasis patients and is associated with metabolic disturbances.
Changes in the gut microbiota composition and intestinal barrier integrity may contribute to the development of both psoriasis and MetS.
6/8
Understanding these links opens up new possibilities for managing both psoriasis and metabolic syndrome.
Remember, if you or someone you know is affected by psoriasis or metabolic syndrome, consult with healthcare professionals for personalized advice and treatment options.
