Could you master violin in 30 days?
What about Spanish, salsa dancing, or landing a backflip?
For 2 years, I learned one new skill every month.
Here's how it went and what I learned:
1. Violin.
I've always found the violin to be a beautiful instrument.
But it's really hard to play it. It took me a long time to even get a sound out of it.
I practised a lot and by the end of month I learned how to play multiple parts of Game of Thrones.
2. Portrait Drawing.
I've never been amazing at drawing.
But I found it was a very learnable skill and I think anyone can get great at it.
Within a month my drawings improved 100 times and I could do a very close to near photo-realistic portrait.
3. Salsa dancing.
I definitely don't have the hips for salsa, but I trained a lot, went to clubs, and danced with many people.
And I ended up doing a final challenge where I danced for a few minutes.
4. Backflip.
This one was painful and scary.
I ended up getting injured, messed up my toe pretty bad, and strained an ab.
But I ended up landing a backflip toward the end. (Never done one since).
5. Juggling 5 balls.
I knew how to juggle with 3, but it's exponentially harder with 5.
I practiced a lot and ended up getting more than 10 catches - which is called qualifying.
Funnily enough, this video ended up being broadcasted on Japanese and US TV.
6. Standup comedy.
I've always admired stand-up comedy but I've never liked the stage.
Practicing was hard - finding open mic nights in Melbourne and waiting all night for 4 mins of practice.
I performed 7 times, got some laughs, and enjoyed the process of overcoming a fear.
7. Meditation.
We know it's important, but I wanted to take it seriously.
I got a Muse brain scanner to see how effective I was.
Goal was to get my brain 50% still for a 5-min meditation. I ended up getting 90% still for a 10-min one.
I was a lot calmer throughout the month.
8. 90-day body transformation.
I've always pushed myself in the gym, but I wanted to test what would happen if I took it perfectly seriously for 90 days.
I trained 5-6 times a week and tracked every meal.
I got into the best shape of my life and learned a lot about training.
9. Spanish.
I wanted to learn a new language but it's really difficult.
I was studying 3-4hs/day. I used a spaced repetition method and the Michel Thomas system.
After the challenge, I met some girls from Costa Rica and we had a 20-min conversation entirely in Spanish.
10. Waking up at 5 AM.
I tried to wake up at 5:30 AM every morning to see if it actually helps.
I found myself incredibly productive, but I was napping throughout the day.
Overall I did really enjoy it.
These were only some of the challenges.
The goal of this thread is to show you that if you practice anything for a month you can get quite good at it.
I hope it inspires you to learn a new skill.
