In terms of the passing networks, United had correctly identified Liverpool's right flank as a defensive weakness and in possession everything was geared to go down that side. Paradoxically it meant Diallo was less involved than in previous games but this meant United were more unpredictable and it allowed players like Dalot to shine.
Liverpool, didn't do anything drastically difficult in terms of shape but with Trent hurting them so much off the ball, they couldn't get into a settled controlled rhythm and they had to fight fire with fire throughout the game.
Pre match, I was concerned whether Dalot would 'attack the space' or would he keep going back inside onto his right... these concerns were unfounded as he used his left foot to great effect and reallly just went for it, bursting past Trent early into the game and setting the tone,
It really set the tone for the remainder of the game and it meant Konate had to come out wide and leave VVD isolated against Hojlund who was in the mood to work hard.
Hojlund has previously given the likes of Saliba and Gabriel a tough time and despite being criticised so heavily for his 'rawness' when he is in the mood to run he channels and puts in a shift, he can really work even the best CBs hard as he is a combination of height, power and to a lesser degree dribbling (this needs to be seen more).
Whilst he didn't win most of his duels clean, it was the impression he made on the opposition which was important.
Should have done better with his chance though.
De Ligt's defending for the Gakpo goal wasn't good enough. He should have stood his ground as Gakpo was at a tight angle on his weak foot, yes there was a chance of a pass across the box but he could have tried to fake an attempt to block it without having to go to ground... plus a quick scan of the situation would have told him United have sufficient numbers back.
What a display by Ugarte. Many questioned why we rated him rather highly in our analysis of him but as we said... use him as a pure 6 like PSG did and you are completely misunderstanding his profile as a player.
In this destroyer type role where he can roam round breaking attacks, short, sharp bursts in possession and he looks technically a different player than when he is back to goal picking it up in the pivot positions.
