2024 has been a huge year for @PAKEP_KSA! So over the next few days we will share summaries of what we have done/published. First up- STANDING STONE CIRCLES (SSC). What are they? Well- we know that they are Neolithic domestic structures. How do we know this? 1/ x.com
Our Assistant Director Jane McMahon (@jane_cmcmahon) is the lead of this research. For the last several years, Jane has been surveying and excavating SSC across AlUla. When she excavates them- she finds domestic material. Like what? 2/ x.com
We find bones from the animals they eat. Thousands of pieces of chipped stone from the stone tools they make. Arrowheads and jewellery. We even found an entire pigment processing assemblage, including grinding stones and the pigment itself! 3/ x.com
There are a lot of SSC! They're everywhere! We also survey the areas near the SSC. Here you can see @FinnStileman with @DiscoverAlUla @albalawi, our local colleague who helped us find a source for the pigment. @PAKEP_KSA owes a lot to Yousef and his brother @yahalbalawi1! 5/ x.com
