The Mahabharata war started due to many reasons, one of the major reasons being the division of the kingdom. It is believed that more than 1 lakh people lost their lives in the Mahabharata war.
Shri Krishna once went to Hastinapur as a peace ambassador on behalf of the Pandavas. At Hastinapur, Shri Krishna made a proposal to the Pandavas from the Kauravas to give only five villages to the Pandavas which was rejected by Duryodhana
Dhritarashtra also agreed with Shri Krishna and started convincing Duryodhan to avoid war by giving 5 villages to the Pandavas. He explained to Duryodhana that he should give up his stubbornness and make a treaty with the Pandavas so that this destruction can be avoided.
Duryodhan got angry and said that I will not give even a straw of land to those Pandavas and now the decision will be taken only through war.
