1/3) Can Anti-Biotics Cause Depression 💊🧠? (🔗 at the end)
It’s a provocative, but biologically reasonable question, and one I’m forced to ask based on new data combined with a personal experience. Let’s start with the data.
A new paper, published in Cell Metabolism, finds that fluctuations in your gut microbiome can literally alter gene expression in brain regions that control Circadian rhythm the Stress hormones (HPA) axis, also influencing stress hormones (cortisol)
🦠Messing with the microbiome – like with antibiotics – screws up these rhythms

2/3) 💊🦠The researchers found that treating mice with antibiotics disrupted microbiome rhythms, and, in turn…
🕒 Screwed up natural cortisol rhythms (left)
🧠Altered gene expression in key brain regions like SCN, amygdala (right), and hippocampus).
🧠Glutamate (the brain’s main excitatory neurotransmitter) levels were also altered.
🧠Even gene expression in the blood-brain barrier (BBB), your brain’s gatekeeper, changed, making the brain “leakier” at specific times.
💩It’s a “shitty situation”… in fact, to demonstrate a causal relationship between the microbiome and these patterns, the researchers performed fecal transplants, i.e. they transferred microbiomes from antibiotic-treated mice (at different times) to germ-free mice to recapitulate the patterns.
3/3) What does this all mean?
🧬 Microbiome rhythms shape brain gene expression
🦠 The circadian stress axis is vulnerable to microbiome disruption
😭 This impacts stress resilience, and brain & mental health, and brain health.
TLDR: The gut and brain are rhythmically dancing partners. Mess with one, disrupt the other. #GutHealth #BrainHealth #CircadianRhythm
