My paid newsletter Write with AI just crossed $300k/year in revenue.
• It took 578 days
• I ran zero ads
• It takes less than 4 hrs/week
Here’s my 6-Figure Paid Newsletter Blueprint:🧵 x.com
In this thread, I'll cover:
• The 2 types of paid newsletters
• The 4 criteria for a successful paid newsletter
• And how long to give your newsletter to see if it has 6-figure potential
Let's dive in!
For context, I've built 2 paid newsletters to 6 figures:
• Category Pirates to $150k/yr
• Write With AI to $300k/yr
These are both "Category Newsletters," not just "regular" newsletters.
Let's look at how to build a successful paid newsletter: x.com
Paid newsletters are The Holy Grail of writing online.
Every writer wants to know “how to get paid for their writing”—and subscription revenue is king.
But paid newsletters are the ultimate forcing function for whether you know how to write things readers truly value: x.com
There are only 2 types of newsletters that can go paid:
1. Researched Curation.
These are in a fast-moving category that compresses a ton of information on a specific subject into a quick read.
The author almost always has established credibility by researching a specific topic.
2. Original Thinking.
These provide:
1. In-depth insight & analysis
2. And unique information on a specific subject
The author almost always has established credibility from successfully building things in their niche throughout their career.
Every other Paid Newsletter doesn’t make the cut (and won't monetize enough to pay the bills!)
I usually get a lot of pushback here, but people either pay for:
1. News/information, compressed, with unique and meaningful takeaways
2. Or for direct access to your expertise x.com
And here are more brutal truths about newsletters:
• Effort has nothing to do with getting paid
• “How long” you worked on it doesn’t matter
• Your own credibility is a “nice to have,” but not a “need to have”
What matters is if your newsletter meets these 4 criteria: x.com
1. Your newsletter has to be infinitely repeatable.
It must be on a topic where new information is always valued:
1. Researched Curation: There is always more to research.
2. Original Thinking: There is always more expertise to share.
2. Your newsletter has to be tangible (vs intangible).
Readers very rarely, if ever, pay for “words.”
They pay for items delivered in newsletter form:
• Reports
• Prompts
• Templates
• Case studies
Make your newsletter feel like an analog object: x.com
3. Your newsletter has to be objective (vs subjective).
People pay for tangible, objective outcomes.
“Become happier in your relationship” = Intangible & Subjective.
But “Scripts of exactly what to say when you start dating again as a divorced man” = Tangible & Objective.
4. Your newsletter has to be price-anchored to an upside.
Readers can only rationalize spending money on a newsletter that:
1. Makes (or saves) them more money
2. Or saves them time (and time is money)
So, if you don't meet the above 4 criteria, your paid newsletter will fail.
So, how long does it take to know whether your paid newsletter has 6-figure potential or not?
About 6 months.
If your paid newsletter isn’t generating $5-10k per month within the first 6 months, you most likely haven’t checked all the boxes on the above checklist.
You might have “some” people willing to pay.
But you haven’t figured out what is truly valuable—and if churn hasn’t turned your growth rate negative, it will soon.
You can give it 1 year if you want to “trust your gut.” But anything beyond 1 year is usually a dog.
That's it!
