Character of #Bajirao_II who betrayed the nation for power, pecuniary gains & false sense of pride.
Madhav Rao II committed suicide & died without an heir. He allegedly named Bajirao II, his cousin, son of Raghunath Rao as Peshwa.
Nana Fadnavis was against this & wanted…
the widow of Madhav Rao to adopt a son whom he would appoint Peshwa.
Bajirao II was a step ahead, he made allies & promised Daulat Shinde as Regent in place of Nana. But Nana’s spies informed him of this plot.
Now the grand old Devil Nana released Bajirao II from jail & made him
the Peshwa while retaining his position. As threat of Shinde forces marching to Poona frightened him. Now Bajirao II, again the perennial coward withdrew his commitment to Pagnis.
Scindia’s forces under Pagnis on way, Nana fled to Purandar.
Pagnis urged Scindia to appoint Chimna
Appa as Peshwa in place of Bajirao II. Nana gave his tacit approval to this & bought temporary relief.
Now Bajirao II was once again back to prison. But Pagnis would settle for nothing less than Nana’s head.
Fadnavis fled once again & made plans to release Bajirao & appoint
him as Peshwa.
And for this end, to wean away Scindia from Pagnis’ side. He & Bajirao used the beautiful daughter of Ghatge Sakharam as bait for Daulat Scindia.
Nana prevailed. But Bajirao wasn’t happy with Nana as he had scuttled his father Raghunath Rao’s chance at Peshwai.
Old rivalry resurfaced & Bajirao asked Ghatge to put Nana in jail.
Later finding Scindia & Ghatge beyond his control. Bajirao again released Nana Fadnavis to use him against Daulat Scindia. But Fadnavis was past his prime, old & died 2 years later in 1800, leaving Peshwa as a
puppet in hands of Scindia.
Meanwhile, Tuko Holkar died in Indore, leaving behind 2 legitimate sons , Kashi & Malhar & 2 illegitimate, Jaswant & Vitho Holkar. Kashi being eldest claimed Indore but Malhar challenged it, Jaswant & Vitho supported Malhar.
Kashi took help from
Daulat Scindia who tried to seize Malhar in person & in the fight Malhar was killed. Jaswant fled to Nagpur & Vitho to Bhamburda, was captured & taken to Pune.
Jaswant gathered a large army & planned an attack on Scindia who had enthroned himself at Pune, Peshwa was powerless
Scindia extracted ₹4,700,000 from Peshwa to fight Holkar. Jaswant lost the battle.
Bajirao II felt he was now free of Scindia’s influence & wanted complete control of his realm.
The character of Bajirao II came forth in this intergennum, he was a weak & coward Man. He started
a campaign to eliminate all who allegedly opposed him. First victim was Raste family, he even had Vitho Holkar tied to the leg of an elephant & dragged him in streets of Pune leaving him dead.
Enraged Jaswant Holkar gathered his army & marched onto Desh, Pune dodging Scindia’s
army he reached outskirts of Pune. Bajirao true to his character once again fled & holed himself up at Sinhagad, didn’t seek help from Scindia for the fear of losing his realm at Pune.
Then he fled to Konkan, boarded a British ship at Rewandada & sailed to the port town of…
Bassein now called Vasai.
It was here he signed the Death Warrant of Maratha hegemony. Bajirao II signed the Treaty of Bassien on 06 December 1802 with the British seeking help against his enemies.
Enemies whom he cultivated due to cruelty & cowardice.
Jaswant sacked Pune &
installed Amrut Rao as Peshwa & left. British Army led by Arthur Wellesley & supported by aides of Peshwa, Patwardhan, Ganesh Gokhala, Appa Nipankar… entered Pune Amrut Rao was pensioned off to Benaras & Bajirao II as Peshwa again.
Bajirao single-handedly destroyed whatever was
left of Maratha Confedracy, not that Nana Fadnavis wasn’t to be blamed, the old man had far too long been power centre & his Machiavellian manoeuvres finally dug the grave of Maratha hegemony.
The so called Anglo-Maratha Wars is a wrong terminology, employed by historians to…
hide the ugly truth about the internal inconsistencies of the myriad Maratha power centres who sole aim was personal aggrandisement, even if it meant rapacious loot & plunder.
Conduct of Scindia, Holkar & Peshwa in 19 century reflects on the true nature of Maratha Confederacy.
The rapacity of Holkar in Pune was matched by cruelties of Peshwa against his enemies.
The so called Chatrapati was a puppet of worse kinds. And interestingly, there were more than one Chatrapati.
Myth of Marathas fighting British is Maratha Revisionist History.
