पैशुन्यं परदूषणम् ।
What is wickedness?
Speaking ill about others is wickedness.

धर्मः च अर्थः च कामः च परस्परविरोधिनः।
एषां नित्यविरुद्धानां कथम् एकत्र सङ्गमः॥
यदा धर्मः च भार्या च परस्परवशानुगौ।
तदा धर्मार्थकामानां त्रयाणाम् अपि सङ्गमः॥ Dharma, arthaz and kāma are mutually contradictory and ever opposing each other. In what situation do all these co-exist?
When a wife follows dharma, then in that situation, dharma, artha and kāma will co-exist.

अक्षयः नरकः केन प्राप्यते ।
Akṣayanaraka is gotten by whom?
ब्राह्मणं स्वयम् आहूय याचमानम् अकिञ्चनम् । पश्चात् नास्ति इति यः ब्रूयात् सः अक्षयं नरकं व्रजेत् He who himself invites a brāhmaṇa who is poor and seeking help, and then says he has nothing to give, goes to everlasting hell.
वेदेषु धर्मशास्त्रेषु मिथ्या यः वै द्विजातिषु । देवेषु पितृधर्मेषु सः अक्षयं नरकं व्रजेत् ॥
He who discredits the Vedas, the scriptures on dharma, the brāhmaṇas, gods and the ritual offerings made to ancestors, goes to everlasting hell.
विद्यमाने धने लोभाद् दानभोगविवर्जितः । पश्चात् नास्ति इति यः ब्रूयात् सः अक्षयं नरकं व्रजेत् ॥ Even when there is wealth, the one who never gives nor enjoys it himself, but says he has nothing, goes to everlasting hell.

राजन् कुलेन वृत्तेन स्वाध्यायेन श्रुतेन वा ।
ब्राह्मण्यं केन भवति प्रब्रूहि एतत् सुनिश्चितम् ॥
Is it by ancestry, conduct, study or knowledge that a person becomes a brāhmaṇa?
श्रुणु यक्ष कुलं तात न स्वाध्यायः न च श्रुतम् ।
कारणं हि द्विजत्वे च वृत्तम् एव न संशयः ॥
It is neither ancestry, nor study, nor knowledge, that is the cause. Without doubt, it is only one's conduct.
वृत्तं यत्नेन संरक्ष्यं ब्राह्मणेन विशेषतः।
अक्षीणवृत्तः न क्षीणः वृत्ततः तु हतः हतः॥
One's conduct should always be well-guarded with great effort. The one whose character remains intact suffers no loss, and one whose character is destroyed is as good as dead.
पठकाः पाठकाः च एव ये च अन्ये शास्त्रचिन्तकाः। सर्वे व्यसनिनः मूर्खाः यः क्रियावान् सः पण्डितः॥ Those teachers, students and others who study the scriptures and yet are wicked in their habits are fools. He who follows it in conduct is truly wise.
चतुर्वेदः अपि दुर्वृत्तः सः शूद्राद् अतिरिच्यते। यः अग्निहोत्रपरः दान्तः सः ब्राह्मणः इति स्मृतः॥ Even if a person is well versed in the four Vedas, he is to be regarded as wicked if his conduct is not right. He who performs the agnihotra and has his senses under control is called a brāhmaṇa.

प्रियवचनवादी प्रियः भवति ।
What does a person who speaks affectionately gain?
A person who speaks affectionately is loved by all.

विमृशितकार्यकरः किं लभते । विमृशितकार्यकरः अधिकं जयति ।
What does a person who thinks and acts prudently gain?
One who thinks and acts prudently is highly successful.

बहुमित्रकरः किं लभते ।
बहुमित्रकरः सुखं वसते ।
What does a person with many friends gain?
A person with many friends lives happily.

धर्मे रतः किं लभते ।
यः च धर्मरतः सः गतिं लभते ।
What does a person devoted to dharma gain?
He who is devoted to dharma attains the goal.

कः मोदते ।
पञ्चमे अहनि षष्ठे वा शाकं पचति स्वे गृहे।
अनृणी च अप्रवासी च सः वारिचर मोदते॥
Who is delighted?
A person who cooks vegetables in his own house during the fifth or sixth part of the day, who is not in debt and does not live away from home, is truly delighted.

किम् आश्चर्यम् ।
अहनि अहनि भूतानि गच्छन्ति इह यमालयम् । शेषाः स्थावरम् इच्छन्ति किम् आश्चर्यम् अतः परम्॥ What is truly a wonder? Day after day, though countless beings go to the abode of Yama (die), the others who remain think they are immune to death. What can be a greater wonder than this?

तर्कः अप्रतिष्ठः श्रुतयः विभिन्नाः न एकः ऋषिः यस्य मतं प्रमाणम् । धर्मस्य तत्त्वं निहितं गुहायां महाजनः येन गतः सः पन्थाः ।। What is the right path?
Logical reasoning is never conclusive; the scriptures too differ in their views; no single sages’s opinion can be considered authoritative. The essence of dharma is hidden in the cave of the heart. Therefore, that alone is the right path which great people have already walked.

अस्मिन् महामोहमये कटाहे सूर्याग्निना रात्रिदिवेन्धनेन। मासर्तुदर्वीपरिघट्टनेन भूतानि कालः पचति इति वार्ता॥
What is the news (ultimate message)?
Time cooks all beings by the fire of the sun which is fuelled by days and nights, stirred with the ladle of months and seasons, in the frying pan of this mighty delusory world.

पुरुषं तु इदानीं व्याख्याहि ।
दिवं स्पृशति भूमिं च शब्दः पुण्येन कर्मणा। यावत् सः शब्दः भवति तावत् पुरुषः उच्यते॥
Who is really a human?
Till the glory born out of one's virtuous deeds are heard across heaven and earth, a person can be called a human.

यः च सर्वधनी नरः ।
Who is truly wealthy?
तुल्ये प्रियाप्रिये यस्य सुखदुःखे तथा एव च। अतीतानागते च उभे सः वै सर्वधनी नरः॥
A person who treats the pleasant and the unpleasant, the joys and the sorrows, the past and the future, with equanimity, is a truly wealthy person.
