In Walter Isaacson's biography of Elon Musk, there's a story of Elon playing poker, where he consistently went all-in until he won.
Peter Thiel says Elon understands risk in ways others don't fully comprehend.
Let me explain: 🧵
David Deutsch calls it the Principle of Optimism.
The principle of optimism says that anything not forbidden by the laws of physics is possible with enough knowledge, which can be acquired through trial and error.
You can also see this philosophy in SpaceX.
They had multiple failures before successfully landing the Falcon rocket in 2015.
They celebrated a rocket that exploded mid-flight as a success simply because it successfully detached from the booster.
Trial and error.
This is also reflected in Sam Altman's business advice.
But here's the catch: Trial and error isn’t just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.
It takes resilience and a lot of hard work to embrace setbacks and suffering as part of the journey.
This is a common theme among outliers in almost every field.
They have worked incredibly hard consistently.
Steve Jobs on hard work:
Hard work compounds like interest, and the earlier you do it, the more time you have for the benefits to pay off.
Embrace hard work as a non-negotiable aspect of your journey.
Now that you understand the principle of optimism and are prepared to work hard, there's just one final piece of the puzzle left to solve.
Which is deciding what to work on. You don't want to regret it later and wonder what could have been.
What decisions can you make today to avoid regrets when you're 80, looking back on your life?
By reducing future regrets, you can rest easy, knowing you're living a fulfilling life.
Remember that the people around you influence how you see your own values.
You're shaped by the people you spend time with, so if your friends constantly talk about hustle, that mindset will naturally rub off on you.
Peter Thiel said The advice I wish I could have given my younger self - is this:
"Before getting swept up in the competitions that define so much of life, ask yourself whether you even want the prize on offer."
So, to recap:
👉 Make choices that align with your true desires and values.
👉 Act on them rapidly (Trial and error)
👉 Work hard and don't give up
You'll find satisfaction both in the process and in reaching your goals.
