Arne Slot’s Liverpool vs Ipswich Town
“1st Game & 1st Win In The Premier League”
thread🔻
Arne Slot’s Liverpool struggle in the 1st half against Ipswich as the opponent tries to prevent them from getting into the rhythm with the man-to-man press.
For example, Greaves (LCB) steps up to press Szoboszlai.
Because of that, Liverpool are forced to play more direct but they have players like Salah, Jota, & Diaz who can be very dangerous in exploiting the space behind Ipswich's backline.
As Slot said in the post-match interview, this gives more time for Liverpool to build up since this creates a dilemma for Ipswich to risk it or not.
Their shape alternates between the 4-2-2-2 to 4-3-3 against Ipswich’s 4-2-4 who try to minimize central progression.

In the 4-3-3, Liverpool can create even more progression options vs Ipswich's double pivot and give Gravenberch more space to receive & progress play.
But since Ipswich defend narrow and compact, Liverpool look to create more access in wide areas by pinning them with Trent inverting — then try to find Mac Allister’s and Szoboszlai's movements to progress.
This creates more distances for Ipswich’s double pivot/backline to cover if they decide to turn into the man-to-man.
In the 2nd half, the execution are getting better.
Love these movements from Trent to arrive rather than occupy the central areas (the shape transition from 4-2 to 3-2), resulting in a big chance for Diaz.

The switch play from the LHS helps Trent get more space to receive and combine quickly with Szoboszlai.
Liverpool patiently circulates for the 1st goal — Ipswich DM (Luongo) presses wide to Trent which leaves gaps in central areas for Gravenberch to receive and progress.
The front line also pins the backline and creates space that Trent can exploit.
As in previous examples, Ipswich like to press and defend with a high line this allows players like Trent and van Dijk to attack with their passing range + consistent delivery.
The trademark van Dijk & Salah combo.
The narrow positioning helps Salah to receive and attack closer to the box for both goals.
We can see this from the pre-season but the passing from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk make the difference.
Another example of the narrow positioning which helps Salah to receive a great chance.
Fluid build-up shape from 4-2-2-2/4-2-4 to 4-3-3 with Mac Allister advancing and Gravenberch finding the movements to progress.

On the high press, Liverpool look to minimize central progression and press aggressively in wide areas with Mac Allister joining in.
(More examples of Ipswich's build-up through the RHS).
4-2-4 defensive block concern.
The distances between the wingers and the fullback make it easier for the opponent to attack the gaps.
(Ipswich almost got a penalty call if it was not offside).
Examples vs Sevilla.

Arne Slot earns his 1st win in debut PL game for Liverpool against Ipswich — after reacting well in the 2nd half.
“The way the other team defends, there we have to find our answer.”
