Salah or Haaland? (A THREAD)
In this thread I’ll be giving my thought process on each of the following draft structures to hopefully help you make your decision ⬇️
1. No Salah, no Haaland
2. Salah and no Haaland
3. Haaland and no Salah
4. Salah and Haaland
#FPL #FPLCommunity
1. No Salah, no Haaland.
Below is an example of how a draft without the two would look like, honestly don’t hate this if you want to try and separate from the template.
Firstly, there’s so much more balance in this side as you’re able to spread the funds more efficiently.
The midfield is stacked, and you’re able to use that money to afford other great picks you might not have, such as Trent, Son, Bruno, Raya, etc.
There’s also just a lot of certainty with this draft as you don’t have to go with unproven cheap picks in defence/midfield, eg…

-Raya has the best defence in the league, £4.5m GKs are either not nailed or don’t have good fixtures
-TAA is fantastic when fit, on set pieces, great haul potential
-Bruno, Son and Palmer were all so consistent last season, compared to the many unknowns among cheaper mids
Obviously you can counter that point as you’re excluding the 2 most consistent performers in the league in Salah and Haaland, and when they’re in form they’re easily the best captaincy options every GW.
One monster haul from either of them will punish you if your premiums flop.

When they do start to hit form it’ll also be hard to get to them.
Salah’s alright as theres a lot of premium mids but Haaland is £6m more expensive than any other FWD.
Being able to roll 5FTs could help, but with your budget so spread out you’ll probably have to go without.
Overall:
+ pricing this season brings more variance in drafts, Salah and Haaland’s EO will be lower than previous seasons
+ there are many nice picks from LIV + MCI that can cover them at a much cheaper price (eg: Szobo and Foden)
+ lots of strong premium options available
- hard to move to Haaland when he’s in form with his price, being able to roll more FTs helps a bit though
- both have insane haul potential and are the main source for goals in their respective teams
- both are arguably the best and most popular captaincy picks in GW1+2
2. Salah with no Haaland
Here’s an example of an only Salah draft. Again, just a template you can play with (eg: downgrade Kai and switch to a 352)
You can definitely tell the differences as big players such as Trent, Son, Raya and Bruno are gone for cheaper alternatives.
With this draft structure you get to have arguably the best captain for GW1 in Salah. Expect him to run riot against Ipswich
And by going without Haaland, you’re able to save over £6m by downgrading him to other forwards such as Isak, Watkins, Havertz or even a Chris Wood
However as mentioned before, Haaland is perhaps the most explosive pick in FPL
In the right games where he gets the service from his team, has the confidence to finish off chances and in games where defences switch off, it’s a double digit haul easily.
The questions now are, do you trust your picks to consistently outscore him over the season? Can you used that saved money to good effect?
£6m is a lot to play with, so hope you can separate against the pack - especially other managers who have also chosen to avoid him.
Overall:
+ you own arguably the best GW1 captain
+ a lot of similarities to no Salah and no Haaland drafts
+ mid priced midfielders look very promising this season
- you have to ride the storm in GW2 when Haaland faces Ipswich
- have to sacrifice some great picks (eg: Trent)
3. Haaland with no Salah
Here’s an example of an only Haaland draft. Erling’s £2.5m more expensive than Mo, so you do sacrifice that little bit more.
The good thing about going Haaland over Salah?
Haaland is comfortably the best captain pick in GW2 and Salah isn’t in GW1.
In GW1:
Isak and Gordon play SOU (H). Southampton were not a good defence by any means last season
Son plays LEI (A). It’ll be Steve Cooper’s first game in charge, and we all know how much Son thrives at LW under Ange
Both could rival Salah as the best captain pick in GW1
Meanwhile in GW2, Haaland is by far and away the best captaincy pick.
Most of the “big teams” all have relatively tough fixtures
Add on to the fact that Haaland is under 40% owned at the time of writing, there are actually big gains to be made if he does haul in that game.
Squad budget is so important in FPL, and 15% of your budget will already be taken up by Haaland if you go with him
For some, that’s a worthy sacrifice for a record breaker.
But think
For the same price as Haaland and a £4.5m mid, you can get Palmer and Isak (£19.5m)
Worth it?
Overall:
+ Haaland’s ownership is as low as it will ever be.
+ he’ll be the best captaincy pick in most weeks
+ captaincy with no Salah in GW1 is coverable
+ has so much service compared to Salah. He missed 34 big chances last season and still scored a goal every 95 mins
+ easier to downgrade Haaland than to upgrade someone to him
+ has the most haul potential in the game
- he’s very pricey compared to other forwards
- somewhat coverable if KDB and Foden available
- worth £2.5m over Salah long term?
- sacrifice of squad depth, less balance
4. Haaland and Salah
Finally, here’s a draft with both Haaland and Salah
Honestly it’s just down to how you think Haaland does in GW1+2. It’s easy to downgrade him later and you still have Salah to be the main premium in your side long term with your supporting mid priced picks
The big reason I don’t mind having both is because of the strength of the mid priced midfielders
So many good midfield picks at £7.5m and under
Players like Eze, Gordon, Nkunku, Bailey, Szoboszlai and Johnson provide immense value and can cover their clubs’s respective premiums
Even the £5.5m/£5.0m mids such as Elanga, Minteh, McNeil, Mavididi, Hutchinson and Rogers can act as cheap bench picks to help afford this kind of draft.
Overall, I would monitor how Chelsea look in their next few preseason games for your full verdict on Haaland…
… Maresca himself has admitted: “For sure, we are going to concede goals through the season trying to build from the back”
If you don’t think Haaland does well GW1 then it could be worth going without, picking a different City asset to captain in GW2, you can save funds and FTs
Overall:
+ huge value in cheaper MIDs this season can help afford this kind of draft without weakening it too much
+ best captains GW1+2
+ easier to downgrade premiums than it is to upgrade to them
- lots of sacrifices have to be taken
- 27.5% of budget gone with 2 players
