The Air Pistol sharpshooter glasses are probably the coolest Olympics gear:
▫️Three main parts: a lens, a mechanical iris and dangling blinders
▫️The key to sharpshooting is aligning the target with the pistol’s front and rear sight (not just aiming at the target)
▫️A challenge is that eye at rest wants to look into the distance and it takes effort to look into foreground
▫️How the glasses work:
— THE LENS helps the shooter's eye focus on the gunsights while aligning with a target…but the target gets blurry so…
— THE MECHANICAL IRIS allows the shooter to narrow the aperture of the iris, which lets the target and gunsights remain in focus (same principle as a camera lens)
— BLINDERS block view from one eye without the shooter having to physically keep it closed, which would cause strain (think about when you want to focus on something with one eye)
Anyway, Yeji Kim — and these glasses — needs a super-hero franchise ASAP.

The swag is unreal. Here she was competing with her daughter’s elephant doll in the pocket (left) and whatever she’s doing in this pose, which is ice (right)
Note: the video from the first post is from another competition. Kim Yeji did win Silver in the 10m Air Pistol at Paris 2024 (the Getty Image in 2nd post from this year).
Her teammate Oh Ye Kim got the gold (interestingly, looks like she only used the blinders).
The good thing about the top clip being from another event is it won’t get hit white a DMCA
Absolute peak performance
