Who is he?
Dr. Goobie (not his real name) did his undergrad at MIT, went to 4 years at an unknown medical school & 6 years of neurosurgery training.

His job was to do surgeries for patients dealing with back pain. In his words,
"It's like you have a house & the roof, the top of your house has a leak somewhere & rainwater is coming down into the house, ruining the drywall."
He said his surgeries were like tearing down and rebuilding the drywall, but he did not fix the leak.

It was at that point he realized that the incentives of hospitals are not aligned with healing:
"The way things are set up is that the hospital needs to make money; they need to make money. They need to grow economically.
The problem there is that if you figure out a way to help patients heal and that in that way doesn't include a pill or surgery well then the hospital and the doctor are in big trouble.
Because if you figure out a way to help people heal and you can't charge them for it well then you've just worked yourself out of a job"

"I still did surgery but I really felt like really felt like the focus of medicine wasn't in the right place. It wasn't in healing it was in making money from surgeries and pills.
I'm not knocking any particular place that I work. I work for very good hospitals, and people have good intentions, but the incentives are not right in the whole system."

My personal notes:
I don’t believe this is the sentiment shared by everyone in the medical field nor is it everyone’s experience with hospitals.
But I do see how the incentives are misaligned, especially with regard to healthcare.
I was never a doctor but I felt this working a corporate job in my 20’s. It’s the feeling of emptiness in doing something you don’t believe in.
It’s soul crushing to feel like you’re punching the clock and not making other people’s lives better with your work.
I’m glad Dr. Goobie came out and created this video. It seems to have hit a nerve as well collecting 9 million views in the past 2 weeks.
