Cancelo’s story completely changed in the second part of the season. Still, I look at it from a tactical perspective. Do I want Cancelo to be the fullback in big games against world class opponents? No, but do I appreciate his quality and versatility? Absolutely.
In La Liga, we play approximately 25-30 games against opponents who tend to sit deep and wait for transitions. Teams who consider a draw a win. To break down such teams, we are in need of creativity.
Out of all the players in Barca’s squad, Cancelo had:

He can play on both sides and adds depth at the back.

For me, Cancelo is at his very best when he is allowed to drift inside. That’s where he can take advantage of his best qualities - vision, passing and dribbling.
For example, Cancelo can invert from his fullback position and allow one of the players in the double pivot to push forward. Cancelo has what it takes to be helpful in buildups from central areas.
He is also capable of receiving the ball out wide and be a threat in 1v1 situations, and has a great final pass using both the outside and inside of his foot.
Still, I want him to have a very defined role in the squad. In big games, he requires protection, because he can’t be trusted defensively. IF he plays, it should be as a winger or in midfield - not as a fullback in a back four.
Cancelo is a guarantee in Portugal’s squad and has played many games under Pep Guardiola. We should get him, but on the right terms. I would not consider a permanent transfer this season, but explore the possibility of an extended loan deal.
