1/2 Mυslims arguing that jizya was a tax applied for the dhimmis for their own protection should read their own scripture carefully.
"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold forbidden that which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jezia with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." - Quran 9: 29
The last word that is translated as "subdued" doesn't just mean surrendering but the original word in Arabic is "ṣāghirūna" which means "humiliated". (See pic below). So, the jizya is clearly a tax of humiliation.

2/2 First of all, dhimmis aren't allowed to build new places of worship or repair old places of worship as per Islamic law - so what kind of protection or maintenance are we talking here?
