THE MAIN DOUBT ABOUT HANSI FLICK AS A BARCA COACH… 😱
(A Thread)
Hansi Flick’s time as Germany’s head coach was far from as bad as people assume it to be. Expectations from his tenure at Bayern Munich pushed the expectations to the limits. Still, you can draw lines to Barca.
Hansi Flick had a brilliant start. Germany were unbeaten for 13 games in a row (9 wins and 4 draws). The draws were against teams like Netherlands and England. A few months before the 2022 World Cup, they outclassed Italy in a 5-2 win.
Now, the World Cup in Qatar changed everything. 3 games destroyed the project. Hansi Flick was heavily criticized. However, the circumstances must be addressed.
Germany vs Japan: 1-2.
Germany took the lead, but after accumulating 3.09 xG and striking the post/bar twice, they conceded twice and lost the game. Margins.
Germany vs Spain: 1-1.
The Spanish side kept possession against aggressive German players - in a traditional 4-2-3-1 setup. Germany matched Spain’s numbers in midfield. It was classic Hansi Flick ball.
However, the terrible chance conversion continued. While the game bounced back and forth, Germany shifted to a higher gear towards the end. When the referee blew the whistle, Germany had more shots, higher xG and more big chances created.
Costa Rica was the final opponent. Germany won 4-2, but here is the crazy part: They still underperformed in front of goal. Germany had an xG of 6.06, 10 (!) big chances created and 32 (!) shots.
Three games ended Hansi Flick’s reign.
He was let down by players failing to score clear cut chances. At Bayern Munich, his team hit 100 goals from an xG of 89.5. It did not matter if the opponent scored, because his team would end up outscoring them.
Xavi and Barca faced similar issues. No team in La Liga missed more big chances (76). Time after time, we were punished after failing to take the lead. Can Hansi Flick find a more balanced approach, so we don’t get a repeat of his time as Germany’s manager?
