Can the evolution of football tactics justify Joao Felix’s continuation for Barca? 🔵🔴
(A Thread)
There are trendsetters in football. Pep Guardiola is arguably the best example. He comes up with new ideas, which other teams implement over time. Arsenal, Barca, Bayer Leverkusen - all variations of the same model.
Right now, most teams (top and bottom) are extremely compact when defending. A double pivot, wingers tracking back, four ‘defensive’ defenders. Just look at Manchester City.
In many games it feels like two machines going at each other. Similar patterns of play, similar way of defending. Real Madrid are probably the only team who stand out with a different philosophy.
Here comes the value of a ‘moment’ player. A player who can turn a game on its head out of nothing. The best in the world are probably Vinicius and Mbappe.
Joao Felix has won Barca 28 points across all competitions this season by scoring or assisting. If you study the match winning actions, you see that they are quite spectacular.
This includes the bicycle kick against Cadiz, the 90 minute trivela goal against Real Betis, and the sensational assist for Raphinha’s goal against Las Palmas.
Joao Felix is not consistent and he might never be, but a place in the squad can be justified if it is on the right terms (financially). He has x-factor.
I consider him a player capable of changing the course of a game, but without the need of him being a guaranteed starter. That has to be deserved.
