Serious thread.
While couched in benign language, know this: when you buy a phone the IMEI is recorded against your ID (driver's license/ Aadhaar card etc). This IMEI is a unique identifier for your phone.
When you give away your phone, you don't sever this documentary++
++ evidence that ties you to that device. Much like selling a car without transferring the RC.
It makes you liable and answerable to any misuse that phone may be put to.
Forget the foremost fear in your mind, that of someone triggering an explosive with that phone.
Even ++
++ mundane things like sending threatening messages/ using it for nefarious purposes would make you look de facto guilty. Of course, the law has provisions for you to fight it and prove that you are innocent, but are you willing to spend a decade fighting a case for a kind act?
Hence the general rule: if they are not in your family, don't give them your used phone. Don't throw away phones that are in a usable condition.
Cell phones are marvelous devices and, in the right hands, can cause immense damage.
Always be aware.
If after this, you feel compelled to donate your phone because you feel strongly, please protect yourself by getting a written signed ownership transfer document with @AbhinandanSekhr .. specify the IMEI and the model.
Abhinandan: the least you could do while helping is create+
+ a standard legal ownership transfer document that you or your organization signs to protect the good Samaritans.
All the best.
