Tactical Focus: Full-back Movements In Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea Build-up vs Brighton
thread.
Identical with the game vs Nottingham Forest — Mauricio Pochettino Chelsea’s build-up shape was 3-2 with Cucurella inverting.
Enciso jumps ➡️ Adingra in a 2v1 situation, space for Caicedo ➡️ Progression
Brighton’s narrow press means Chelsea were able to exploit the wide areas with their CBs (ex: Badiashile).
Caicedo looked to get more space after advancing — combining quickly with Jackson between the lines.
Another way to bypass Brighton’s press was by positional rotations/interchanging positions.
Both Gusto and Cucurella can invert/form a back 3 which helps the Chelsea's build-up more fluid.
On the RHS, Gusto as the RCB/RCB hybrid often interchanges with Caicedo to form the double pivot with Cucurella.
He also could advance to the right inside channel — usually this happened when Palmer/Gallagher dropped deep.
Creating the ‘unpredictability’ to disrupt Brighton’s defensive marking.
A similar thing happened on the left side.
Gallagher LB ➡️ Palmer double pivot ➡️ Cucurella advances wide to create the passing lane ➡️Mudryk moves inside.
Counter movements.
Another great example of the runs — with Cucurella looking to support Mudryk.
Webster would be in a 2v1 situation.
In the 1st goal, Cucurella supported Gallagher with his underlapping runs from the double pivot.
Finding Palmer with the cutback.
For the 2nd goal, we can see a more complete build-up.
Gusto & Cucurella double pivot with Gallagher as LB/LCB — taking advantage of the narrow press with ball-carrying ➡️ Progression.
Cucurella offered the runs but Chelsea looked to delay and switch the play.
Space was created on the right side.
Gusto’s runs from the back 3 to support Madueke — similar to Reece James’s runs vs Nottingham Forest.
Cutback to Nkunku.
