Míchel’s Girona vs Barcelona
“Getting Ready for UCL”
[THREAD]
In the deep build-up, Barcelona looked to form a 4-2-4 shape.
One of the double pivot (Christensen & Sergi Robert) advanced to support the attack (create a new passing lane and help the combination play).
Christensen made similar movements in Barcelona’s early goal — outnumbering Girona’s back four and freeing himself up from Herrera and Garcia.
Lamine Yamal was precise with his passing.
(More of Herrera and Garcia’s struggles later below)
Unfortunately, the lead only lasted for a few seconds since Girona could score from kick-off. T
hey shifted Barcelona’s press/block a little bit and attacked the space quickly on the left side.

Despite that, Barcelona started the game better and dominated the game in the 1st half.
Girona defended with a 4-1-3-2 to 4-4-2 narrow shape — but Yangel Herrera and Aleix Garcia struggled to protect the backline (which also reflected in Barcelona’s 1st goal).
Fermin Lopez & Gundogan + the double pivot movements created constant problems for them.
A similar process to the 1st goal — Yamal was able to find Fermin Lopez’s blindside runs (vs Herrera) inside the box.
Xavi's Barcelona usage of the maximum width also helped to stretch them even more.
They kept finding the space in central areas to attack.
Barcelona also created a lot of 1v1 situations for Yamal & Cancelo.
Before the break, Yamal’s 1v1 created chaos on Girona’s left side and he was brought down inside the penalty box.
Meanwhile, Michel’s Girona was forced to go long from goalkicks against Barcelona’s man-to-man press — relying more on winning duels/2nd ball (Dovbyk).
At least, this was useful in gaining territory.
Their build-up shape was more of a 3-2-2-3, with Michel Gutierrez (LB) inverting to the left inside channel and forming a box midfield with Ivan Martin.
Their wingers (Savio & Tsigankov) can interchange with them.

After gaining territory, they looked to combine in close proximity (mainly between the box midfield & wingers) and create something from there.

In the 2nd half, the game became more open and it was easier for Girona to progress through transitions.
One thing about them is that they can quickly turn into dangerous situations when given just a little bit of space.

From the 1st half until early in the 2nd half, Barcelona looked to become the more dangerous team but they were unable to finish the chances to kill the game which gave Girona a little bit of hope.
Girona then forced a mistake from Sergi Roberto by outnumbering the wide areas.
This was where the momentum shifted quickly.
Girona struggled to build-up with short passes throughout the game and relied more on winning the 2nd balls/duels to progress.
But in the important moment of the game, they were able to win this and hurt them in transitions.
The same thing happened in the fourth goal — they won the 2nd ball in the middle of the pitch and created something from there.

Before the third goal, Girona changed their shape with more of a 4-2-1-3/4-3-3 after Yan Couto came in for David Lopez.
Even though there were tweaks, they still positioned themselves in a similar fashion for the 2nd ball.

With the victory against Barcelona, Michel's Girona confirmed their spot for the UCL next season.
This game is a great learning process for them on how to find different ways to win.
