Thread 1/6:
What does the latest NOTAM issued by @SomaliCAA instructing airlines to maintain radio silence North of 6 degrees latitude plus the verbal instructions to do the same all mean?
And how’s this affecting Mogadishu’s revenue.
Keep reading to learn more #Somaliland. 👇🏽
First, Mogadishu is at 2 degrees latitude.
Instructing airlines flying over 6 degrees North to maintain radio silence clearly indicates loss of airspace control to just 4 degrees beyond Mogadishu which translates roughly to 444km. 👇🏽
Second, this is no longer about the loss of airspace control.
So far 164 flights have chosen an alternate flight path, while others have stopped payments for no ATC service from MOG FIR.
As a result, Mogadishu has lost roughly $2m in revenue the last 2 months alone. 👇🏽
The second quarter of this year though is where it gets really interesting, with expected revenue loss expected to hit close to 65-70%.
Signs of bad times ahead— ATC’s in Mogadishu are already being asked to take mandatory pay cuts. 👇🏽
These losses has also caused panic in @TheVillaSomalia and @HassanSMohamud convened an emergency meeting this week to discuss possible solutions as airspace fees constitute roughly 22-27% of Mogadishu’s yearly revenue of $200m per year.👇🏽
Mogadishu’s smugness and them reneging on past agreements with #Somaliland is going to cost Mogadishu big.
Next NOTAM to look forward to maybe in the next couple of weeks unless @icao steps in is:
*MAINTAIN RADIO SILENCE IN MOGADISHU FIR NORTH OF 2 degrees latitude*
