Did you know that Kung Fu was invented & perfected by an Indian Prince & not by Chinese?
Don’t miss this thread on the incredible story of a 6th century Tamil prince turned Buddhist monk turned martial arts champion – Bodhidharma
In the 6th Century, nestled within the kingdom of Pallavas in Kanchipuram, lived a prince named Bodhidharma.
Despite his royal status, he felt a calling beyond the realm of politics.
Opting to pursue the path of enlightenment, Bodhidharma sought the guidance of the renowned Buddhist master Prajnatara, ultimately embarking on a journey to become a Buddhist monk.
Urged by his mother to flee to China due to familial strife, Bodhidharma set forth on a transformative pilgrimage
Meanwhile, in 495 AD, the Indian monk Ba Tuo, known as Buddhabhadra, introduced Xiao Sheng Buddhism to China and established the Shaolin Temple with imperial support.
In 527 AD, Bodhidharma, now known as Da Mo in China, arrived in Guangdong province, bringing with him the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism.
Upon witnessing the physical deterioration of the Shaolin monks, Da Mo imparted upon them techniques to improve their fighting skills
He is credited with teaching the Eighteen Arhat Hands and the Sinew Metamorphosis Classic, while manuscripts like the Yijin Jing and Xisui Jing, attributed to him, surfaced within the temple.
Though contemporary biographical records of Bodhidharma are scarce, his legacy persists through myths and legends, including tales of nine years of meditation and the creation of tea by cutting off his eyelids.
While some details may be hagiographic and exaggerated, the essence of his journey underscores the far-reaching influence of ancient Indian culture beyond its borders.
