Critical thinking is a superpower.
Here’s a playbook to make it one of yours:
Lao Tzu said, “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions,” and so on.
Thoughts become reality.
If your thoughts are your most important asset, how can you be sure you’re thinking correctly?
The answer is critical thinking.
Critical thinking is a way to process information to make better decisions.
It’s the opposite of how we normally think.
Most thinking is automatic.
Critical thinking is purposeful.
It involves:
• Observation
• Analysis
• Evaluation
• Reasoning
• Communication and,
• Self-reflection
We don’t automatically think critically.
If we did, we’d spend too much time on small decisions.
Critical thinking isn’t instinctual.
It requires effort.
But big decisions, conversations, and ideas require critical thinking.
Here’s your guidebook on critical thinking:
Use Rationality
Even the most rational of thinkers act irrationally at times.
Separate your emotions from the problem.
Consider the problem without emotional input.
Follow the evidence, not just hunches, beliefs, or confidence.
Analyse the available information.
Think Skeptically
Critical thinkers are skeptical of everything they’re told.
They are not passive.
They look at facts and data.
Critical thinkers analyze their source’s merit, not just the information they’re given.
Ask, “Can I trust this source?”
If so, use it.
Ask Plenty Of Questions
Critical thinkers ask questions about everything, including themselves.
When approaching a complex task, idea, or concept, ask yourself:
• What do I want out of this? and,
• What might I be overlooking?
Use your answers to guide your process.
Employ Self-Reflection
To separate yourself emotionally, you must be able to reflect on your intentions.
When examining a problem, use your past knowledge.
Then ask, “How do I know this?”
Consider your role.
Critical thinkers question all their sources, including themselves.
Ignorant Certainty
Ignorant certainty is the belief that all questions have a clear answer.
In the digital age, we believe we can just Google the answer.
You can’t believe everything you see online.
Many of life’s questions don’t have a direct answer.
Think realistically.
Remain Open To New Ideas
Critical thinkers evaluate all possibilities, even those they haven’t already tried.
They evaluate all ideas and concepts.
They consider multiple perspectives and views.
Critical thinkers don’t reject ideas they’re unfamiliar with.
They examine them.
Think Independently
After reading Einstein’s famous paper, C.P. Snow said it was as though he’d “reached the conclusions…without listening to the opinions of others.”
Einstein thought independently and succeeded.
To answer tough questions, think for yourself.
Reverse The Question To Find A Solution
If A+B=C, then wouldn’t C-B=A?
If the issue is time management, don’t cut the time it takes to complete a task.
Consider its value.
Think about external implications.
Go down many rabbit holes.
Doing so will help you find a solution.
That’s how to think critically today.
How can critical thinking help you?
