On 8 April 1989, exactly 35 years back, the fateful incident happened.
As part of her duty, she went to inspect examination centres for matriculation exam falling in her jurisdiction.
After the inspection, the returned to the PS in their Blue Jeep at around 3:00 PM.

The Police team had no idea that an ambuss of valley based terrorist group People's Liberation Army (PLA) is waiting for them near Konthoujam, 2Km from their PS.
The terrorists fired at the vehicle & Vandana, who was sitting in the front, fired back at the shooters with her revolver like a brave lioness.

But unfortunately due to large volume of fire, driver lost his control & vehicle hit the roadside. Terrorists of PLA took advantage of it & fired at her.
She received several gunshot wounds in her head causing fatal injuries. Four policemen in the jeep were also injured badly.

After investigation, CBI identified the killers & concluded that five cadres of the Revolutionary People’s Front (PLA) were involved in the cowardly act.
It filed a charge-sheeted against them in Manipur too.
The cowards were N Saratchandra, Thokchom Kunje alias Tolen, M Inaoba alias John, L Tombi alias Surendro & Ch Subhash alias Dolen.
After investigation, CBI identified the killers & concluded that five cadres of the Revolutionary People’s Front (PLA) were involved in the cowardly act.
It filed a charge-sheeted against them in Manipur too.

The long judicial battle began now.
Despite of CBI submitting hard evidence with over 50 witnesses & 107 pieces of evidence, the case could not proceed well in the court.
Some of the perpetrators expired during long trial but the real shock came on Saturday, 22nd March 2014.

On 22nd March 2014, Mr A Guneshwar Sharma, Designated Judge of Manipur East, acquitted rest of the accused saying that there is no hard evidence against them.
The story could not make headlines but the martyrdom of Vandana will be remembered for centuries.
