Another media conspiracy, this time that Trump attacked a Secret Service agent on Jan 6, imploded yesterday.
Remember when the media—in unison—reported the “bombshell” allegations as fact?
I do. And I’ve got screenshots.⤵️

You’re familiar with the story I suspect but just in case: when former aid Cassidy Hutchinson testified Trump had “lunged” for a secret service steering wheel on Jan. 6, the media rushed to print the salacious (& false) claims as true.
Here’s @NBCNews @CNN @ABC @washingtonpost

Trump was allegedly going to drive himself to the Capitol to take part in the riot.
That’s what @CBSNews @Independent @NPR @NewsHour said.

I can’t possibly get to all of the examples of this but here’s @TIME and @Reuters saying the same thing: Trump attacked his secret service protection to try to get to the Capitol on Jan 6.
We now know those claims were invented.

We know that because Hutchinson’s testimony has since been revealed by @GOPoversight to be baseless and wrong. Four different witnesses, including the driver who was allegedly attacked, disputed it.
And it wasn’t just that Hutchinson allegation the media ran with…

Hutchinson also claimed that Trump knew his supporters were armed and sent them to the Capitol anyway.
Hutchinson is the source of this narrative that the press alleged.
She’s been revealed as a liar. Maybe @rollcall @NPR @washingtonpost @nytimes should update their reporting?

Back then the walls were supposedly closing in on Trump. Hutchinson’s testimony was the nail in the legal coffin.
What does that mean now that we know the story was a fraud? Will we get updates from the “legal peril” crowd at @nytimes @guardian @washingtonpost @TheWeek ?

What about the “complicity” crew at @TheAtlantic and @NYMag?
Anything to follow up on now that we know they were fed this story by someone who lied about her interactions?
This was a HUGE story.

And these claims were in service of a broader media narrative: Trump was unhinged, a lunatic, a dangerous threat to America.
That’s where @washingtonpost @nytimes @guardian went with Hutchinson’s since-refuted claims.

I suspect we won’t hear much now that the story these outlets breathlessly reported has been discredited.
But maybe it’ll throw cold water on the media star turn Hutchinson has gotten at @MSNBC @CNN @washingtonpost and @NewsHour

Or maybe we can revisit her book about all this with a more critical eye?

At least can we get a break from having her on to predict the end of America, @MSNBC @CNN @jaketapper?

I mean, @nytimes wrote up her fashion, among other swooning nonsense.
Although I did get a kick about how she has “stories” about Trump. A fitting word.

Although I wonder if @nytimes gave the game away a bit here.
Hutchinson’s testimony inspired Biden’s DoJ to more aggressively come at Trump, you say?
That might be worth digging into, @GOPoversight

One thing is clear: Hutchinson lied to make herself seem important. And the media played along because they hate Trump and are willing to elevate any claim, no matter how thinly sourced, if it makes him look bad.
