More than a decade back, a similar drive was initiated. Entire area was converted into cantonment and for two days, demolition drives were undertaken.

Since 1975, this game of encroachments is going on in Haldwani. Over 48 years have passed and these slums were slowly converted into permanent structures. Many kinds of structures came up over a period but railway administration and RPF couldn't do anything. (4/N)
In 2016, the first case was filed after Nainital High Court order. However, by then, over 50,000 people had already found a place to live on this land illegally. High court had asked the Railways to remove encroachments within 10 weeks.(5/N)
According to the Railway report, 4365 cases related to encroachment were heard by the Railway Authority. The encroachers failed to show the court any valid documents which proves their right on the land. (6/N)

For 47 years, the local congress leaders continued supporting the encroachers only to further their appeasement politics. The party leaders not only gave support to continue staying on the encroached land but also gave them voting rights! (8/N)
Late Congress leader Indira Hridayesh continued to support these people, who in return, received good amount of votes from the area. (9/N)
After Indira Hridayesh passed away, the baton was now in the hands of the her son, Sumit Hridayesh, who won from Haldwani Vidhansabha seat and this Banbhoolpura area played a pivotal role in his win.

The encroached land kept on increasing and subsequently, the matter was kept pending in the court while congress politicians kept providing support to these encroachers. (11/N)

For securing votes, they garnered support by endorsing encroachers, despite knowing that encroachments can never be permanent. Congress party has never supported development and always focussed itself on destructive politics. (14/N)

Construction of new lines, washing, maintenance-yard, shunting-lines etc. is also to be done.
