Would Pep Guardiola returning to Barca as a manager be a good idea? 🤔
(A Thread)
The greatest manager ever lead Barca into their most successful era. Pep Guardiola created what many consider the best team of all time. Unfortunately, his reign only lasted 4 years. Ever since leaving, Barca fans have dreamt of his return.
When Barca play poorly and struggle to win, the desire to see Pep Guardiola on the sidelines intensifies. Still, is it a good idea?
Key words: Expectations, history, reality.
Pep Guardiola won the famous treble in his first season for the club. He broke records, and made a habit of destroying Manchester United and Ferguson in Champions League finals.
However, we shouldn’t forget the players.
Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Pique and Puyol were successful other places than just Barca. Xavi and Iniesta lead Spain to the Euros in 2008, the World Cup in 2010 and the Euros again in 2012.
Pep Guardiola also had the BEST player of all time. Messi was already the GOAT back then.
What Pep Guardiola did was to implement a system that maximized the abilities of the players at his disposal. He created surroundings in which they thrived, but the abilities had to exist within the players.
If Pep Guardiola returns, the expectations will be higher than ever before due to his history at the club. Enormous pressure follows, but there is still one problem: The flaws in the squad still exist. For example, he still wouldn’t have a world class defensive.
I am sure Pep Guardiola could improve Barca by a lot, but could it ever match the expectations from the outside? I doubt it.
Pep Guardiola’s return does not guarantee a Champions League trophy. He won the trophy for the first time since leaving Barca last season.
Pep Guardiola is unmatched. I would not risk his legacy, knowing the reality of Barca’s squad, and the unrealistic expectations that would come. It’s impossible to do better than he did last time.
