CBS News rushed out a scoop that Texas officials had “physically blocked” CBP from rescuing drowning migrants.
It wasn’t true. While CBS has since corrected the story, it kicked off a mini news cycle readymade to smear Republicans.
I’ve got the sceeenshots. ⤵️

As @BillMelugin_ points out, this narrative originated with the Biden admin. Biden’s own DoJ has since disputed their own admin’s initial claims.
Tons of outlets repeated that lie, and many haven’t corrected their own reporting, even though @CBSNews doesn’t stand by the initial claims.
They’ve since edited the piece and the headline, adding an editors note that’s far different.

The same can’t be said about @washingtonpost, who at least as of early this afternoon were content to leave up their initial story and tweet parroting a Dem congressman repeating the same dishonest assertion about Texas.
@axios did the same thing as WaPo.
Maybe I’m a romantic, but “first draft of history” used to mean something. There’s a reason you don’t stop the process at a first draft.

Even @AP, who frequently update their headlines, still had this one up.
An important point: it isn’t accurate anymore to claim “US says” as AP does here because Justice has disputed the claims.
Forget misleading. The headline is just wrong.

Again, the Biden admin has admitted this isn’t true. But the tweet/headline from @NewsHour hasn’t changed.
My hunch is that, if the parties were reversed, this tweet wouldn’t be up.
It probably never would have been.

Again, the way @NBCNews blames this on “federal officials” is misleading.
The details have been updated. Why hasn’t the reporting followed?

Why is this story still up @NPR?
Or this tweet, @politico?
@Reuters? Any follow up here?
@nytimes did a little better, all things considered. They still implicated Texas without cause in a way that would clearly lead an uninformed reader to think Texas did something they didn’t. But they at least reported the details.
@CNN did the slightly more dishonest version of that, tying what Texas did to the deaths in the headline, and then repeating the inaccurate accusations of @RepCuellar that the state was responsible.
Some outlets took the initial reporting and tried to push it even further, leveraging the inaccuracy to attack Texas and Republicans.
That included @RollingStone, @Forbes (cmon guys), @MSNBC (not surprising) and @Newsweek (embarrassing)

We even had the foreign press doing this. A thought I’ve had lately is that the British press is just…completely unhinged? Will think more on that. Here’s @guardian
What the coverage elides is that Biden’s open border policies are driving these types of deaths.
If you’re interested in real reporting about the border, @FreeBeacon has been doing it. Give this piece from @SaysSimonson a read:

And I’ve written about the media spinning for Biden about the border too. Here’s the latest. @FreeBeacon

When the media abandon the basic responsibilities of the craft of journalism - fact checking, asking the government questions, etc - they aren’t behaving like a free and fair press anymore.
They’re state stenographers, advancing the claims of Democrats, not the truth.

One last thing: Please don’t lose sight of the fact that the people who died aren’t just Twitter news, they’re real flesh and blood humans, made in the image and likeness of God, the same as anyone reading this.
