Some European cities I have visited that I believe are incredibly underrated (in no particular order)🧵
All photos by me :)
Aix-en-Provence, France🇫🇷
Aix-en-Provence is an elegant small city in the Provence(duh) region of France. Filled with winding streets, pastel colored houses, and beautiful squares filled with cafés and fountains. Hence, its nickname, The City of Water and Art.
Nîmes, France🇫🇷
This beautiful small city is extremely rich in history. Its Roman heritage can be seen all over the city with the best preserved Roman Temple, a complete amphitheater, and much more. The city has great food and a lovely atmosphere.
Bergamo, Italy🇮🇹
Most people that come to this city do so because of its airport, but not many visit the city itself. Bergamo has a rich architectural, artistic, and cultural heritage. This fortified city has dozens of beautiful churches and palaces to see. Definitely worth it.
Lugano, Switzerland🇨🇭
The largest city in Ticino, Lugano, is nestled on the shores of Lake Lugano, giving it prestigious views. The architecture is somewhat similar to Milan, but to a much smaller scale. It's a nice place to spend an afternoon in.
Bordeaux, France🇫🇷
Probably the least underrated city on this list but still underrated. Bordeaux is rich in history, culture, and a must visit for wine lovers. This stylish city has transformed itself over the last decade and is quickly becoming a popular destination in France
Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain🇪🇸
This city has some of the most amazing food I've ever has but the city itself is equally incredible. It is one of the 3 Basque capitals on the Spanish side and they're proud of it. I loved this city very much.
Leuven, Belgium🇧🇪
Because of its proximity to the capital, it is often overlooked. It's a lively city with many bars, beautiful architecture, and a rich academic heritage since the largest university in Belgium is here! I'm haply to call this city home.
Ghent, Belgium🇧🇪
Ghent is also often overlooked due to its proximity to Bruges and Brussels, but this city has a lot to offer. Its former wealth is reflected in its architecture, as you can see in the photo below. Gothic heaven.
Bilbao, Spain🇪🇸
Bilbao has a bad reputation for being an ugly and dirty industrial city due to its past, but in the last decades, Bilbao has put a lot of effort into rebranding. It's filled with amazing food, colorful architecture, and friendly people.
Noto, Italy🇮🇹
Sicily is famous for its Baroque, and Noto makes it easy to understand why that is. The city's architecture is incredibly intricate and mesmerizing. As with anywhere else in Italy, the food is incredible!
Timisoara, Romania🇷🇴
Timisoara was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for a long time, and its history can be seen in its architecture. The city is nicknamed Little Vienna because of it. It's a very beautiful city that I believe will get famous in the next few years.
Lille France🇫🇷
Lille was once part of Flanders, and this is evident in its Flemish Renaissance architecture. This city feels very different from the average French city, and despite being less than 1h from Paris, it's not very well known.
Pau, France🇫🇷
I am very privileged to be able to call this city my home. Pau is a small city at the base of the Pyrenees, which means it has a pristine view of the mountains. The city also has a castle, a beautiful old town, amazing food and good weather.
Toulouse, France🇫🇷
The Pink City is one of the most unique and beautiful cities in France. As the capital of Occitanie, this city has an incredibly rich history dating back 3000 years. Like much of France, food here is amazing, and people are friendly.
Mons, Belgium🇧🇪
Typically, Flemish cities receive all the love, but Mons deserves it, too. It's a cute little medieval city in Wallonia not well known outside of Belgium. It boasts a beautiful Baroque belfry that offers panoramic views of the city!
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg🇱🇺
Luxembourg is mostly famous for being a rich small country but its capital has a very rich history. It was so heavily fortified that it was called the Gibraltar of the north. Its hills offer great views and the city is nice.
Rouen, France🇫🇷
This city wasn't called the Athens of the Gothic Era for nothing. Rouen's medieval streets are filled with colorful half timbered houses, and its cathedral is one of the most impressive in France. It's definitely worth a visit.
Split, Croatia🇭🇷
This city was once the Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Parts of this palace still stand, and the old town has been incorporated into its ancient walls. On top of that, Croatia is famous for their amazing food!
Korčula, Croatia🇭🇷
Korčula was a Venetian city on the island of the same name. Its narrow medieval streets transport you back in time, and the view of the city is straight out of a fairy tale.
Rhodes, Greece🇬🇷
The island of Rhodes is relatively well known, but the city of Rhodes doesn't get enough attention. While walking through its streets, you'll go from Greek ruins to Gothic palaces to Ottoman mosques all within a few meters of each other. It's really interesting
Braga, Portugal🇵🇹
This historic city in the north of Portugal is also famous for its Baroque, having been nicknamed The Baroque City. It has multiple Baroque palaces in its city center and a few Baroque sanctuaries around it.
Maastricht, Netherlands🇳🇱
Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and one of the most beautiful(imo) as well. The city has gorgeous architecture, lots and parks to walk around in, and a great quality of life. And it's the sunniest city in the Netherlands ;)
Antwerp, Belgium🇧🇪
Antwerp is technically the largest city in Belgium by population, so it is a large city. However, despite its size, people don't appreciate its cultural value enough. Antwerp was historically absurdly wealthy, and that can still be seen today!
Thank you for getting this far. I hope you enjoy it! Remember, these are just my opinion, and it only includes places I already visited. Feel free to share the cities you believe are underrated or just let me know what you think of my choices. I love to read the replies!
