💰 What is the Super League, and what does it mean for Barca? 🔵🔴
(A Thread)
In 2021, the Super League was launched for the first time. Twelve clubs (Six English, Three Spanish, Three Italian) announced their participation. However, due to backlash from fans, managers and UEFA, all clubs left - with the exception of Real Madrid and Barca.
This was the format back then:
- Permanent contestants
- Semi-closed league
- Only 5 places open for qualification
This went against important principles in football. However, a new format has been implemented after The European Court of Justice ruled in favor of the ESL.
❗️ The New format:
- NO PERMANENT MEMBERS
- PARTICIPATION BASED ON SPORTING MERIT
- 64 TEAMS PARTICIPATING
- THREE TIERS. MINIMUM 14 GAMES PER TEAM.
- KNOCKOUT STAGES AT THE END
“Sporting merit” is still something that’s worth addressing. Is it fair?
In the Super League, there will be three tiers/leagues. There will be promotions and relegations between the leagues. New teams enter into the lowest tier through their domestic position. Reaching the top tier takes time.
Let’s say a team like Girona win La Liga. They would then qualify to the third tier, and need to perform at a high level in the Super League for two seasons to reach the first tier. They require two promotions, which is not easy.
Now, the Super League challenges the Champions League. It’s not supposed to interfere with domestic leagues. Games will be played midweek.
As it stands between the Super League and Champions League, it’s important to mention that there has been changes to the UCL format.
❗️The new Champions League format (quickly explained):
- 36 clubs in a “league stage”
- Each team play a total of 8 games
- The best 8 qualify to the knockout stages
- Positions 9-24 go through a two legged play-off to reach the knockout stages
More games = More revenue
💰 Will Barca receive €1 billion?
As a founding club, Barca is set to receive €1 billion. However, this depends on the Super League actually taking place. Right now the league does not “exist “.
For the league to become a reality, it must be accepted by the footballing world/clubs. The Super League promise more money to clubs, making it attractive to those with financial problems.
Still, it’s a long way to go before anything happens.
