Nirankari Guru Gurbachana appeared publicly, Sikhs would gather to protest his presence peacefully. On 26th September 1978, the Nirankari Guru was scheduled to speak in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A large number of Sikhs from Kanpur gathered to protest his presence. In response,
the Nirankaris hurled bricks at the peaceful Sikh protesters. The police, instead of protecting the Sikhs, indiscriminately opened fire on the crowd. Thirteen Sikhs, including Bibi Darshan Kaur, a woman, lost their lives in the violence.
The victims included Bhai Jagjit Singh, Bhai Harcharan Singh, Jathedar Karam Singh, Jathedar Kishan Singh, Baba Kashmira Singh, Bhai Manmohan Singh, Bhai Gurbir Singh, Bhai Balwant Singh, and Bhai Gurjit Singh. The actions of the Nirankaris
and the police reinforced the belief among Sikhs that the government was actively working against them. The Amritsar and Kanpur Massacres foreshadowed the increasing violence against Sikhs by the Indian state in the following years.
