Chando Kalan Massacre 🧵
14 September 1981, the Chando Kalan massacre occurred. Lala Jagat Narain, an anti-Sikh newspaper publisher, was assassinated on 9th September. Narain had displayed strong animosity towards Sikhs, including
denigrating the Sikh Gurus, and during the Panjabi Suba Morcha, he encouraged Hindu Panjabis to list Hindi as their mother language. Following his assassination, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the head of the Taksal's Mehta Chowk branch, was falsely accused of
ordering the killing. An arrest warrant was issued for Bhindranwale on 12th September.
On 13th September, Sant Jarnail Singh was in Chando Kalan, a village in Haryana, on one of his preaching tours, organizing Amrit Sanchars and teaching Sikh principles.
He managed to escape Chando Kalan on the night of 13th September. The next day, Haryana and Panjab Police conducted a raid in Chando Kalan, enraged by Sant Jarnail Singh's escape. They opened fire on Sikh demonstrators, resulting in the death of at least 11 individuals.
The Police deliberately set two Taksal buses on fire, carrying Guru Granth Sahibs, gutkas (prayer books), recordings, and other materials. They also raided the houses of Sikh residents in Chando Kalan and reportedly looted their belongings.
Sant Jarnail Singh peacefully surrendered himself for arrest on 20th September, but he was released from jail on 15th October due to insufficient evidence against him. The Chando Kalan incident, involving the killing of innocent Sikhs and the destruction of
Taksal's buses, including the burning of Guru Granth Sahib Sarups, played a significant role in Sant Jarnail Singh initiating a peaceful protest, which later merged with the Akali Dal's movement to form the Dharam Yudh Morcha. The police responsible for the killings at
Chando Kalan were never held accountable or faced reprimand.
