Brighton vs Liverpool
· De Zerbi vs Klopp
· Build Up Tweaks (Gross)
· Pressing Battles
· Liverpool’s Fluidity
[THREAD]
Brighton started the game with their usual 4-2 shape.
Salah and Nunez were tasked to press the CBs while Szoboszlai was tasked to stay with Gross – Baleba (double pivot).
Gross kept trying to open the access.
Eventually, he got the access by dropping to the backline and receiving outside Liverpool’s press.
This stretched Brighton's backline and resulted in more ground to cover for both Salah and Nunez.
Brighton could bypass Liverpool’s press through wide areas.
Brighton was able to find Veltman on the right side a couple of times, not only because of Gross but also Liverpool’s winger (ex: Diaz) narrow positioning.

Liverpool’s defensive block was compact and also mirrored Brighton’s attacking shape.
Restarting the play (to the GK) created more space between the lines because it attracted Liverpool’s press.
In this example, Baleba dropped to the backline and was followed by Szoboszlai ➡️ Gross 🆓
But Verbruggen decided to play direct.
Liverpool’s build-up shape was more of a 3-2 (+ Alisson who can act as the extra CB in possession).
As usual, Trent has the freedom to receive inside/outside the opponent’s block/press.
Liverpool tried to counter Brighton’s man-to-man press with direct play.
Liverpool also wanted to bait Brighton’s press and find the access to players between the lines.
But against M2M press, direct play is often seen as the easier way to bypass it.
The press-baiting build-up succeeded in creating a big space behind Brighton’s backline.
Liverpool also tried to bypass Brighton's press by constant rotation.
1st try = Robbo advanced and wide ➡️ Szoboszlai dropped deep, Diaz in between the lines to receive
(continue below)
2nd try.
Salah rotated with Elliot, to receive in central areas ➡️ He also dropped deeper which made it hard for Dunk to mark him (if Dunk presses Salah, it will create a 1v1 between Igor and Nunez).
Another example.
Szoboszlai dropped deep and Robertson advanced to central areas, it created space for Van Dijk and a passing lane for Diaz.
Press-baiting build-up is a risky approach but it helps to create gaps that can be exploited if done successfully
In @BHAFC’s 1st goal, #LFC wanted to bait the press just like before but Gross/Adingra/Pedro were well-positioned to trap Mac Allister
Gross usually was deeper than Baleba but that could change in more advanced areas.
Brighton transitioned from 4-2-4 into 3-2-5, they had numerical superiority against Liverpool’s forwards and tried to take advantage of that.
Ball-circulation to move the opponents and create gaps ➡️ Dunk 🤝 Gross
Brighton continued to progress through the right side.
Pedro dropped to help the build-up and created a big space by pinning Van Dijk.
Klopp wanted to focus on the central areas because if not Brighton could easily find Ferguson/Pedro between the lines.
From there, Baleba also could progress with his ball-carrying ability.

In Liverpool’s build-up, Robertson was often very advanced, I think Klopp wanted to reduce his build-up responsibility and tasked players like Szoboszlai instead.
This often pushed Diaz to be more adventurous because the left side was usually occupied by Robertson.
In #LFC’s 1st goal, Diaz was in the right time and the right place to receive, #LFC had numerical superiority (4v2) against #BHAFC’s CBs and they took advantage of that.
Szoboszlai was focusing on Gross all game, I think Klopp knew how important Gross is to De Zerbi’s Brighton.
Szoboszlai was able to intercept the ball from Verbruggen to Gross, and he was fouled in the penalty area.

Klopp tried to be more aggressive in the 2nd half, he took Gravenberch on and tasked him to press high (Baleba).
Brighton build up with 2-3, Gross advancing to receive between the lines.
The access to Ferguson was successfully minimized by Liverpool in the 1st half. Because once he gets access, he can produce dangerous chances.
From a throw-in, Brighton was able to find Ferguson then he gave a through ball to Adingra on the right side.

The 2-3 shape with Gross advancing became a constant theme in the 2nd half, because that way #BHAFC had numerical superiority against #LFC’s backline.
#LFC was compact but didn’t press when transitioned into a settled block, so Brighton kept utilizing Dunk's ball-playing ability
#LFC’s constant fluidity almost got them a 3rd third goal, Mitoma was unaware of Szoboszlai’s runs and March was late to close down because of Nunez dropping between the lines.
Nunez got a big space BTL and there was a gap that #LFC could exploit.

Here, Baleba’s positioning was too far so it opened up the access for Liverpool.
Another great chance for Liverpool.
Robertson👀

Because #LFC was compact defensively (especially in central areas), Brighton tried to attack through wide areas.
Wide combo between Estupinan – Mitoma is one of Brighton’s weapons, but Estupinan is currently injured so #BHAFC lacks the usual dynamics.

Brighton kept attacking Liverpool’s right side and eventually, they got a free kick which was successfully converted into a goal by Lewis Dunk.
High Turnovers from both teams.
