Starting your career as a non-IT background student in the tech industry?
The odds may seem stacked against you, but with the right approach, you can make anything happen.
Here are eight tips to get you going:
Thread 🧵
1) Learn as much as you can.
Read books, blogs, listen to podcasts.
Take online courses, attend webinars, join online communities.
Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more confident you'll be in job interviews and on the job itself.
2) Figure out your niche.
With so many tech roles available, it's necessary to figure out which ones align with your skills, interests, and personality.
Do you like coding and programming, or do you prefer design and UX?
Find the spaces where your interests and skills align.
3) Build a portfolio.
Creating a portfolio showcasing your skills and projects is almost mandatory.
It demonstrates your abilities and creates a platform that recruiters will take seriously.
Compile your best work into a portfolio and have it ready for future interviews.
4) Leverage your network.
Networking with people in the industry will open doors.
Attend industry events, reach out to mentors, connect with alumni from your academic institution.
These connections can get you job referrals or valuable advice.
5) Apply strategically.
Focus on the job opportunities that you are best suited for.
Send tailored resumes and cover letters to each role.
Make sure to use keywords to get past the ATS and get your application directly into the hands of human recruiters.
6) Be open to internships.
Internships are an excellent way to gain experience and exposure to the tech industry.
Even if it's not a full-time job, taking an internship can give you the experience and build relationships that will lead to a full-time job.
7) Cultivate soft skills.
Technical skills are important, but soft skills like communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial to success.
Develop these skills, and you'll have a leg up on the competition.
8) Keep growing.
The tech industry is continually evolving, so it's essential to keep up with new technologies and trends.
Continue learning and honing your skills, even once you're on the job.
Starting your career in tech as a non-IT background student may seem daunting, but it's possible with the right approach.
By learning as much as you can, identifying your niche, building a portfolio, networking, applying strategically, pursuing internships, cultivating your soft skills, and keeping up with the latest trends, you'll be on your way to success.
