:: Content Freshness ::
I see this topic is going to get more and more attention,
and I foresee a whole bunch of misconceptions and myths doing the rounds (again!).
So ... here goes ...
>>>
#SEO #ContentFreshness
>>>
1) Freshness is (can be) a thing.
G tends to test/trial updated content, to see how it performs
(but remember, they don't use CTR or anything like that ! ;) )
And don't confuse Freshness with QDF!
>>>
>>>
2) This will lead to "race conditions".
It can rapidly turn into an arms-race scenario,
when/where everyone updates everything, all the time!
Be selective, prioritise based on business gain/value,
ease of implementation etc.
>>>
>>>
3) Work smarter, not harder!
Honestly, "analysing the SERP" is a general waste of time.
Pick your top 10% pages (that contribute to priority goals the most etc.),
and setup SERP Alerts in tools,
or via your sheets/DB,
or
setup monitoring on top competitor pages!
>>>
>>>
For the sake of "completeness"...
4) Content age is not a factor!
G don't rank page X higher than page Y because X is 4 years old and Y is only 6 months old!
(that would be really stupid, yes?)
Think things like parsing/quality assessment, link acquisition etc.
>>>
>>>
5) Query Deserves Freshness (QDF)
Though similar, this is based on Topics/Terms,
and looks at (demand/interest) trends.
Things like News etc.,
not "how to cook X" or "who was X's second wife"! etc.
(unless those topics are trending! :D)
>>>
>>>
6) Don't go "shallow"
An absolutely MASSIVE flaw with Google is ... it still responds (or did?) to "shallow changes".
You know, tweaking the {year} in a title from 2020 to 2021 etc.
People have abused it for years.
Hopefully - G will actually stomp on that shit!
>>>
>>>
7) Be smart!
I'm honestly at a loss on why so few people
(writers, content managers, SEOs etc.) completely fail to plan ahead with general "content improvements"
*cough*
<schedule some content changes you muppets>
<yes, yes ... for "testing" purposes! *wink*>
*cough*
>>>
>>>
Did I miss anything?
What other stupidity do we get around content age/freshness?
