Is Frenkie de Jong given too much freedom for Barca? 👀
(A Thread)
When Xavi first took over, he implemented a system with well defined roles. Each role came with instructions, both in terms of actions in possession & movements on the pitch. With Frenkie, that’s changed.
Frenkie has been a top 3 player for Barca this season. Arguably the best. He is currently thriving as Xavi gives him a lot of freedom to express himself, betting on the Dutchman to make the best decisions for the team.
Now, I am not criticizing Frenkie, but I do question the role Xavi has given him. Specially in certain games.
What types of games?
When Barca play low block defending sides. In fixtures where a draw is celebrated like a win by the opponents. Getafe, Osasuna.. You name it.
These teams sit back and defend with many players. Creating chances is not easy.
The moment we need to break down a team defending with 10 players in close proximity to their own goal, Frenkie is heavily involved in the final third - an area where he falls short.
When players like Messi & Neymar is given the ultimate freedom to do whatever they like, it’s because they could frequently decide games with a piece of individual brilliance. Frenkie averages 0.49 shots per 90 minutes, and his final pass is not the greatest.
Against the best teams, the situation is different. Real Madrid do not want to chase the ball against their greatest rival, and as a consequence they press high. Frenkie’s job is to move the ball to the final third, and as one of the most press resistant players he does so well.
The space exists as long as we manage to keep the ball. There is no better player than Frenkie in such situations. But when we have to create space, Frenkie’s freedom does not justify the value he adds. Specially when you consider our static left side.
What could be done?
Frenkie should start following certain principles - drop deep and receive passes, make certain movements, or maintain his position, all depending on movements from teammates & the location of the ball. It could create better attacking patterns.
