Ansu Fati. August 2019. A Star is born. Out of nowhere, a player at the age of 16 years, 9 months and 25 days was introduced for Barca fans in La Liga. A dark season for the club, but the big talent provided some much needed sunlight.
One week after making his debut for Barca, Ansu Fati scored his first goal. At the age of 16, he became Barca’s youngest ever goalscorer with a spectacular header against Osasuna. Came on at halftime, and scored the equalizing goal minutes later. It was special.
That is Ansu Fati. He is, and has always been a special footballer. Relaxed, mature, and down to earth, but ruthless when entering the pitch. Two weeks after scoring his first goal, Ansu Fati put on a show against Valencia…
Within the first 10 minutes of the game, Ansu Fati had already scored, and made a phenomenal assist for Frenkie. He was unplayable. Barca fans couldn’t believe what they were watching.
When Barca played Inter in the Champions League group stage (matchday 6), the job was already done. As a consequence, Barca mostly used youngsters & bench players. Ansu Fati had already become more than that. He did not start, because he was considered too important.
Now, against all odds it was 1-1 as Ansu Fati came on as a substitute in the 85th minute. One minute later, he combined with Suarez before smashing into the bottom corner with a shot from outside the box. A goal no Barca fan will ever forget.
His performances did not go unnoticed. Luis Enrique called him up for Spain’s national team. After making his debut against Germany, Ansu Fati scored his first goal again Ukraine. This made him the youngest goalscorer in Spain’s history.
Ansu Fati has struggled with injuries since his debut season. In total, he has missed a year of football. Never gotten the consistency he has needed. It’s taken time to recover physically and mentally, but now he is moving in the right direction.
Last season he experienced no major injuries. He is starting to trust his body again. We saw glimpses at the end of the 22/23 campaign. Ansu Fati isn’t about fancy dribbles or tricks. His understanding of the game is his biggest strength.
The underlying numbers are there. It’s a sign of what’s to come. Ansu Fati accumulates higher xG than ever before, and Brighton knows a talent when they see one. He has made a brave decision, but a decision which will benefit his career. Not a goodbye. It’s a ‘see you later.
