Barca’s midfield is stacked 🔥 If we go back to a 4-3-3, could Frenkie be the current solution to the right back position? (A Thread)
Against low block defending teams such as Getafe & Cadiz, generating as much width as possible is crucial. In those games, a 4-3-3 formation could be the solution. However, Barca have Oriol Romeu, Frenkie, Pedri, Gündogan and Gavi in the squad. How would that work?
🔒 Oriol Romeu is a guaranteed starter. The only natural single pivot. That leaves the interior positions open, which suit Gündogan, Pedri and Gavi well. Frenkie on the other hand could play a different role.
Frenkie as a right back? Played as a centre back in the past. In possession, he is world class. In the first and second phase, he would offer the same as Cancelo. Carrying the ball out of pressure, combining & progressing the play. An upgrade to both Kounde & Araújo.
Now, Frenkie is also able to invert into the midfield, and form a double pivot with Oriol Romeu. Will come in handy during buildups if the opponents try to outnumber us.
With Araújo out with injury, playing Frenkie as a right back would allow us to use Christensen & Kounde as centre backs. When Dani Alves played during the 21/22 season, he added a whole new dynamic to the team. I think Frenkie could do the same.
Many ways to build attacks, which makes us unpredictable and difficult to defend. If Frenkie inverts, Gündogan can move forward and support the right winger with underlapping runs.
Time to fully take advantage of Frenkie’s versatility 🔥 Not saying it’s the best way to play against top teams, as Frenkie isn’t the strongest defensively. It’s different against teams who mainly focus on preventing Barca from scoring…
