LONG THREAD: A very interesting + important conversation has begun brewing around #cloud.
Those of us who've been in the #tech business a long time know it to be a series of pendulums, slowly swinging back + forth between two poles, whatever they are.
Here are common ones.
1/x
A year ago it was common to hear the refrain that #repatriation or use of private #cloud was an outlier.
That you can't "out-cloud" the hyperscalers. That even for edge cases, it would not make sense long term.
That the moves to "go private" like @DHH famously made last year…
@dhh Then, at the beginning of 2023 -- in a markedly different operating environment -- one in which our #CIO network said cost cutting had often become a top priority, we began to see a shift.
Some of my industry colleagues, such as @DavidLinthicum -- began to ask questions about…
Then, as 2023 progressed, we began to see more evidence of small, yet steadily growing shift to private #cloud.
One of the more interesting analyses recently was from @DanSwinhoe at @dcdnews:
datacenterdynamics.com
He cited what was perhaps the most interesting stat in the…
Starting early last year, I also began to hear more stories from our #CIO network that some of them were looking at bringing more #IT in-house.
Reasons given:
Cost: Public #cloud was getting pretty expensive. Cloud vendors were clearing trying to maximize profit margin.…
Other noted that private #cloud is just another blade in a #multicloud strategy.
A couple of months ago, Chad Dunn (@VXchad) noted that #IT can use "cloud repatriation as a tactical lever for workload placement" and that it's absolutely a "critical objective" to overcome major…
Adding to the chorus of the conversation was @SiliconANGLE's @dvellante, who added an important piece to the picture by observing that the growing adoption of #SRE practices in #IT was making private #cloud a real option in more orgs, giving them choice:
"SRE skills make it…
Another interesting observation came from my industry colleague @CTOAdvisor, who came up with his own interesting conclusions as he sought to grapple with the term #hybridcloud as it relates to private DCs/public #cloud, which is really #multicloud by another name, and with the…
For my part, I waded into the conversation with some data-based research I conducted on the benefits that #IT orgs were actually seeing when they found certain workloads that ran better from them -- for reasons of cost, performance, or control -- in the private #cloud.
As a…
Finally, some parts of the industry, farther out from most #IT conversations, are having an even stronger and more visceral reaction to public #cloud lately.
The cloud tech pendulum is really swinging back to on-prem for these people. One of these groups is the growing…
COMMENTARIAT COLLEAGUES:
A detailed thread above on the rebalancing between private and public #cloud that appears to be happening (scroll up).
Would love your comments on this.
