How to write concise, persuasive copy in just 15 min
(Used by legends Joe Sugarman and David Ogilvy)
The 5-Step "Motivating Sequence" formula:
Copywriting is a superpower
Master it and you can monetize just about anything
The problem?
Most people confuse their reader by being:
• Clever
• Cunning
Causing them to give up...
Luckily, The 5-Step Motivating Sequence formula fixes this.
Here's the breakdown:
1. Capture attention
Duh...
You can't write copy without capturing attention.
Hook the reader with:
• A relevant statistic
• A thoughtful question
• The Strongest benefit
(The benefit I gave you was: a piece of persuasive copy in just 30 min)
2. Show a need
All:
• Products
• Services
• Content
Solve some problem or need.
Talk about the biggest problem your reader might be facing.
Maybe it's:
• Job-loss
• Business taxes
• AI & automation
• Disobedient dogs
Whatever your reader deals with...
3. Position your product to satisfy the need
Now here comes the good part...
So you've introduced a nagging problem.
Now, position your:
• Content
• Product
• Service
As the remedy for the product.
Be the reader's Knight in Shining Armor.
4. Prove that your product can do what you say
Most readers can smell when something's bullshit.
The next step is proof. Use:
• Reviews
• Testimonials
• Case studies
• Reiterate the benefits
• Competitor comparisons
Anything you have to prove this works.
5. Ask for action
You've made a strong case.
Don't blow it...
Now comes the time to ask for the:
• Sale
• Share
• Subscription
Or whatever action you wish for the reader to take.
Don't try and be clever.
Literally spell out what you want them to do:
Here's it being used in one of the most famous sales letters of all time:
Sugarman's Blu-Blockers.
• Spark attention
• Introduce a need
• Position your product
• Show proof it does work
• End the sequence with an ask
Simple as pie...
This formula is the shit because it:
• Genuinely teaches the reader something new
• Positions your product as the best solution
• Informs the reader is missing something
• Utilizes storytelling to showcase value
And works for beginner copywriters & experts alike.
Try this with your next:
• Post
• Email
• Carousel
• Newsletter
• Landing page
• Tweet (or whatever it's called)
🤷‍♀️
And watch how your readers (and wallet) respond.
From my corner of the globe to yours,
Happy building ✌️
