[THREAD]
Jones played as the No. 6 and formed a double pivot with Trent.
Szoboszlai played as the LCM, while Mac Allister as the RCM. In Liverpool's system, the LCM is usually assigned to play deeper to help build up.
Allison often acted as the CCB on possession to add more numbers in the build-up and push the FBs (Robertson/Trent) to be more in the wider/advanced zones.
In my opinion, Mac Allister is a better fit for the LCM/6 to help the build from deep, while Szoboszlai is in more advanced positions.
Maybe because he often played as the LCM, but Jones has the tendency to the left side.
Better fit Jones LCM – Mac 6 – Szo RCM
Mac Allister can add more calmness to Liverpool's build-up rather than Szoboszlai.
I think one of the reasons why Klopp put Mac Allister as the RCM, is because Trent and Salah often play direct so Mac Allister's presence on the right side can add more balance.
Mac can also cover Trent to fill the double pivot/rest defence, if Trent decided to attack the box.
This might be better, Jones LCM – Mac 6 – Szo RCM
Szoboszlai can help the build-up, but it’s better for him to start in more advanced positions.
Gakpo often dropped to offer link-up/hold-up play and help the progression.
By dropping deep, he can create space for other players.
That's what he did in the first goal, where he dropped to create an overload to help Liverpool build-up.
He was able to get away from the marker, and his movement attracted Min-jae so there was a gap that he can exploit after a quick 1-2 with Jota.
Nunez suits this Liverpool's direct play because I think Nunez is better when he arrives in space rather than someone who drops deep and offers hold-up/link-up play (Gakpo is better at this).
Liverpool often tried to immediately attack the space.
Diaz (who previously sent a pass to Salah) immediately attacked the box to receive and score.
This direct play suits Liverpool's attack but It can also easily backfired to their defense.
(Will be discussed more below)
Liverpool tried to minimize the passing options to Bayern's double pivot and pressed aggressively on the flank.
Liverpool were able to disrupt Bayern's build-up several times, but the problem was when Liverpool transitioned into a settled block.
Bayern relied on Davies to beat the press and carry the ball forward.
Bayern targeted Musiala and Tel to help progression by 'appearing' in the space between the lines.
Bayern took advantage of their CBs ball-playing ability to provide line-breaking passes to find players in the space between the lines.
Bayern often had the license to exploit the space behind the backline without being pressed by Liverpool's players.
There was quite a distance between the lines so Musiala/Tel can receive several times
Bayern scored 2 goals by exploiting the space behind the backline without being pressed by LFC.
This can be seen in the 1st goal, where Min-jae was not pressed so he was able to give the ball over the top to Gnabry which was then converted into a goal.
In the fourth goal, de Ligt gave the ball over the top to Kratzig who then scored a stunning goal.
High line with no pressure on the ball…
Liverpool doesn't have a DM who can cover the backline, their midfield is too easy to get bypassed.
Curtis Jones has the ability to play as the 6 in possession but the problem is when out of possession.
Bayern's 2nd goal occurred as a result of Jones failing to close the passing options, so Bayern took advantage of the transition to attack.
