In the year 1927, a dog came to SriMatham camp on its own and started keeping vigil. After his biksha was over, Paramacharya ordered that the dog be fed. Strangely, after tasting the food from the
Matham, the dogstopped accepting food from anyone else. The dog used to trot under the palanquin known as mena which carried Periyava. Sometimes it would run between the massive, moving legs of the elephant! When the palanquin was parked, it would step aside to a distance and
watch the sage descend and walk, wagging its tail. Once, the officials thought that the dog had become mad and ordered a servant to leave it in a village, about 40Kms away from their camp. No sooner had the servant returned, than the dog also had got back to the camp! From that
time, until its death, the dog kept vigil and also kept a vow not to take food until it had a darshan of Periyava. As he resumed his divine duties after a short rest following his biksha, Paramacharya would first inquire if the dog was fed. There was an incident when Periyava
served food for an entire army of dogs. He was observing Chaturmasyam at Vasanta Krishnapuram near Tirukkovalur in the year 1947. The peak of Tiruvannamalai hill, about 20Kms away was visible from that place. He used to perform a puja for the mountain that was Lord Siva’s form
where He stayed, with a darshan of the peak. During one such puja, when He was meditating, adog came and put its mouth to the water in the kamandaluh. The people around were very much upset by this happening, and a devotee who was a retired government official, threw a stone at
the dog, which ran howling, and stopped at a safe distance. Paramacharya’s eyes opened at theanxious hubbub. He looked at the people aroud him and ordered, “Collect all the available dishes from the houses of the agraharam. Also bring bucketful of water.”

Periyaval bathed in a river once in the course of his yatra and sitting on its banks performed his japa and meditation. The danda was placed upon a wooden plank nearby. The place was deserted and
not a soul was around. When the attendants were preoccupied a dog came there, sniffed at the dandawas and moved away. The attendants panicked and each one picked up a stone to fling it on the dog. ‘No!’ Periyava gestured with his hand.
“This happened because of our carelessness.

What wrong did the dog do? It is the dog’s nature to sniff at things. I was thinking of changing the danda myself. Now Visvesvara has given his consent.”

sporting the guise of an outcast. Periyaval was referring to this event. The danda was replaced. The incident might seem uneventful. But there was deep significance in it. It is tradition in the SriMatham that a new danda would be taken only when the one in use broke. But now the
danda had not broken. It could have been purified by dipping it into the river. Why did Periyaval resolve to change the danda at once? A few days later, quite casually in the course of the conversation, Periyava himself let out the secret, “That day the dog did not budge from
there in spite of your chasing it repeatedly. So, I continued to sit there under the pretext of changing the danda. If I had got up and gone away immediately, all of you would have hurt the dog. Why must a dog get a beating? So, it was to keep you all under control that I
continued to sit there.”
Surely that was the last birth for that dog. Blessed by Periyava’s gracious glance, it would not continue in the endless cycle of birth and death.
