So as mentioned before the 2 months living in the middle ages project has begun in open air museum @eindhovenmuseum in the Netherlands.
My history pal Yvonne is living, as much as possible, as a medieval woman in the replica of a medieval house.
A 🧵!
Yvonne is going to live 8 weeks like a medieval woman, sleep, eat, wash, etc.
Once a week she'll talk with scientists, archaeologists, historians & other experts to discuss the challenges and all sorts of subjects, all to learn more.
Some experts will stay at the house for a bit.
You can read Yvonne's diary here;
prehistorischdorp.nl
But it is in Dutch, although I'm sure you'll find a way to translate it, I still want to share some of what she wrote here with you directly & perhaps add my perspective.
Yvonne can't be medieval 24/7, she is a busy museum manager and can't just stop doing her job and of course there are the meetings with the experts and talking to the public.
But the adventure began on July 3rd.
July 4th: Yvonne realises that besides the public and visitors, animals can be quite a pest.
A sheep escapes its pen and steals vegetables from the garden.
Flies but also birds enter the home to steal food if Yvonne leaves it uncovered for just a moment.
July 5th: Yvonne wonders about the earthen floor, how to stop it being so dusty?
There's dust on everything.
A chemist expert mentions that ammonia would harden the floor, but you'll have to use urine for that.
So perhaps they'll try something else first, like just water?
I myself also lived like a medieval woman in a medieval house, unfortunately not 2 months long :(
The dirt floor didn't bother me, but I also gave it a little water wash now and then, which made it a bit more solid & less dusty for a bit.
Here I am going medieval many years ago:
Anyway, if you're in the neighbourhood (Eindhoven) you can visit.
More about the museum here:
prehistorischdorp.nl
I'll follow Yvonne's diary and keep adding to this thread as the experiment continues.
Yes, I wish I could do something like this!
Medieval commune anyone?
