🇧🇷 Neymar:
Last chance to make things right or is it already too late? 🔵🔴
(A Thread)
- 10 years ago, Neymar joined Barca.
- 4 years later, he made the biggest mistake of his career leaving for PSG.
- Each year since, he has dreamt of a return.
Neymar was named Messi’s successor. 10 years after he first joined Barca, will he wear the shirt for a second period?
Before addressing the possibility, some ground-rules must be established.
1. Neymar has suffered 23 injuries since joining PSG.
2. Neymar left us at a bad time.
He would have to take a HUGE salary cut, and get in a good physical shape right away.
Now, who is Neymar at this stage of his career?
Neymar turned 31 y/o in February. He has changed a lot over the years. He used to be one of the best dribblers in the world - blessed with pace, agility & spectacular ball control, but a physical decline made things different.
We could not sign Neymar and play him like we used to. He is no longer a traditional left winger.
In the 19/20 season, Neymar averaged 6.16 dribbles per 90 minutes. This season he averages 2.21 dribbles per 90 minutes. 39.9% success rate (worst in his career).
This is something Neymar must accept himself. He has to dribble less.
If Neymar is to flourish, he must play in central areas in the right surroundings.
Fortunately, this is something Barca could provide.
Despite the age difference, Messi & Neymar are relatively similar profiles. Barca wanted Messi to feature as an attacking midfielder. Neymar is capable of performing in the same role. Gavi, Pedri, Gundogan + one more addition would be great depth for Barca. That’s Neymar’s hope.
Neymar’s strong sides?
With more experience, he has achieved better vision. A world class playmaker - unreal imagination, great combination player (pass and move), and a variety of high quality passes to open up defensive systems.
Compared to other attacking midfielders/wingers in the top 5 leagues, he ranks in the top 1% for:
🥇Assists (0.56)
🥇Expected assists (0.46)
🥇 Progressive passes (9.41)
(Per 90 min)
Consider Neymar a playmaker more than a goalscorer/1v1 specialist.
If Barca is to even consider it, Neymar has to make big sacrifices.
- Lower his salary by A LOT
- Show that he is in good physical shape (not when he arrives, but before).
- Push to leave PSG
Would you allow him the chance to make things right..?
