Hinduism did not have castes till British forcefully clubbed the population into four different castes during 1871 census. This caste system was devised along what was successfully done in Americas between 1500 and 1800 in Mexico.
But unlike 16 castes in Mexico, Indians were divided into 4 castes whose names are derived from Varna System of Hindus.

Varna system is concept which provided a path for Moksha depending on individual’s choice and what nature provided during this birth.

Varnas are decided at birth using the lunar calendar and star associated with birth. Since there are 27 stars and four varnas, the varnas get assigned in a way the ratio of varnas remain the same throughout civilization.

However, this varna is mutable and one can change the varna by choosing a different profession/school. Human beings are provided an opportunity to attain Moksha either through Dharma at birth or through Dharma at school.

Dharma at birth is called Jati Dharma; This comes from the varna in which you are born. If you are born in Brahmin varna, you have duty to study scripture and create knowledge for others.
Dharma at school is called Kula Dharma . The term Kula is Sanskrit for school! (Like Gokula, Gurukula.. English word School actually comes from Sanskrit word kula! )
One is always provided lateral entry to other varna based on the school. India's greatest mathematician Aryabhatta was born as a Shudra but went to school and became an Acharya by Kula Dharma. This lateral entry is the initiation.
That is why Brahmana, Kshatriya, and Vaishya have initiation ceremonies where Kula Dharma is added to the Jati Dharma.
There is no initiation for Shudra because they assist the other varnas and hence can move from one varna to other. There is no shame or harm. It is just that they are happy to follow. Some of us want to be like that.
However puranas , Hindu text books are replete with examples where shudras have become brahmans/kshatriya/Vaisya by their merit. It is just a lottery at the precise time of birth you get a varna assigned by the position of stars. It is not hereditary like casta system of Europe.
The British in order to break the civilization and create divisions instituted the caste system which was completely birth based and hereditary. This is a political construct.
