Who is at fault for Messi NOT joining Barca? ❌
(A Thread)
I see people blame Messi.
I see people blame Laporta.
Neither are guilty for the dream comeback not taking place. Why? We have to go back two years.
Summer 2021. The world was in shock as Messi had to leave Barca. A few months prior to this, Laporta had become president.
He inherited an impossible task from the previous board who fled the scene. €1.35bn in debt, poor revenue, and sky-high salaries
Laporta was being pressured by La Liga & Tebas to sign the CVC deal - an agreement where the tv-rights would be sold for the next 50 years. In return, clubs would receive money.
Tebas tried to take advantage of Barca’s financial issues saying it was the only way to keep Messi.
Laporta & the board studied this deal, but came to the conclusion that it would jeopardize the future of Barca. Alongside Real Madrid & Athletic Bilbao, they refused to approve it.
Tebas was furious. Barca HAD to let Messi go.
As Barca was already exceeding the salary limit given by La Liga, they couldn’t register Messi as his contract had ran out (was considered a new player)..
Laporta would have loved to keep Messi. Him leaving made Barca’s financial situation worse & hurt the president’s legacy.
Barca’s salary limit went from €97m to -€144m (yes, minus) in January 2022. In the summer, Barca activated economic levers to sign players. The increased revenue for that exact summer gave a new salary limit: €657m.
It allowed top signings such as Lewa, Kounde and so on.
This was essential. It would hurt Barca’s brand if the club couldn’t compete for one more season. The best way to generate income is by staying relevant.
This summer Barca have less opportunities to make signings as the club can’t benefit from economic levers.
Barca are not in a position where they can guarantee Messi that he will be registered. It’s nothing the club can do about it.
Messi wants to join, but as a family man, he wants his future settled at this very moment.
That’s fair for both parties.
If someone is to blame, it’s Bartomeu for creating the financial crisis, and Tebas for no flexibility in FFP rules, even though other leagues follow different guidelines. Less strict ones.
Laporta, Barca and Messi are all victims.
