Whether you start with Excel, or you start with statistics or you first get domain knowledge, at the end of the day, if you can analyze data, draw meaningful insights, solve problems, help make data driven decisions then you are a data analyst, no matter where you started from
They say start with Excel, @Rita_tyna started with Python. They often recommend the google data analytics course but @jessica_xls started with the IBM data science course and some of us have not finished the Google course but that does not make you any less than a data analyst
Your learning path is your learning path. Do not scatter your learning path just because someone told you to go and learn Excel but you started from Power BI. If you are learning power bi, then learn power BI and when you have completed your learning track in power BI
then you can add excel based on the recommendations you got (If you wish)
I write this thread to talk about the power of focus and awareness. The question is, where do you want to get to? What tool do you want to be good at? What do you want to learn?

Imagine you are in the tech team of a company and you want to venture into data analytics and the company uses Tableau or Python, but someone is telling you the right path is to start with Excel
It wont be a good idea at that point

I believe people recommend excel because excel is a popular tool that most of us are familiar with and we know how to use so it makes sense to start from where you'd be comfortable before going to unfamiliar tools but get this, You are no less of a data analyst if you start from
a different tool
I end with this statement "When putting together a piece of a puzzle, you can start from the top, the bottom, the edges, the middle or any where you please. Just remember that you have to fix the puzzle. Regardless of where you start, you can complete the puzzle
