Luftwaffe Officer Dietrich Schulz-Köhn (aka “Doktor Jazz”), Django Reinhardt, four until recently unidentified black musicians & a Jewish man outside La Cigale, a jazz club in Paris during the Nazi occupation in 1942.
What a photo!
Dietrich was a member of the Nazi party, even joined the SA, but also loved Jazz.
During the war he was a lieutenant in the Lufwaffe and went to France.
When he became a POW he gave lectures at the POW camp jazz club.
After the war he became famous as radio presenter Dr. Jazz
Also on the photo is the great Django Reinhardt, the best guitar player that ever lived.
Go check out some of his music on youtube, he's amazing, especially considering that his hand was badly burned and he could barely use some of his fingers.
I love his music.
On the right of the photo is Henri Battut, a Jewish musician who had to go into hiding during the Nazi occupation, Dietrich may have helped him out with ration cards at that time.
The black men have long remained anonymous but Dr. Kira Dralle managed to identify them.
From left to right we first have Guadeloupean trombonist Al Lirvat.

His music is on youtube:

Then comes Claude Martial.

He plays on this song, together with the other chaps;

I've known that photo for years and always wondered who the men are and am so delighted that they now have a name.
You can read Dr. Dralle's very impressive research here;
